New HSF on its way...?'s about airflow

Arkua 7228 w/ 30CFM Delta is on it's way soon. The Delta is a 60 mm and I've been thinking about a quieter fan with similar flows fitting the ah heck.

Would I be able to fit an 80-60 flow converter on the top and mount an 80 mm successfully? Would the airflow be more directed?

Actually, in a nutshell...would this be a better cooling solution? Noise matters too.

Now to find a mobo that'll fit this beastie (thinking AK31, thoughts?). It'll be cooling an Athlon XP 1600+ on a yet-to-be determined mobo with some overclocking.

Thanks

well, its a proven design, so performance shouldn't be an issue. Looking at pictures of the HS, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to attach a 60-80mm converter on it. I'm not sure how performance would be affected though. While on of the benefits of using such an adpater is that you remove the "dead spot" of stagnant air situated sirectly underneath the hub of the fan, this HS is designed so this actually doesn't matter. It would probably be about the same, if the cfm ratings of the two fans were equal. And of course it would be a lot quieter. So yeah, I think it would be a smart move.

Get the Arkua 7528 instead.

It uses the newer design 70x70x15 fan. It moves the same amount of air at much lower noise. This new 70mm fan design is quite amazing. It uses a new 11-blade design that has the same CFM as the older 60mm, 6800 rpm fan at -8db less noise. (Each -3db is half of the noise.)

More information from the YS Tech site.

Just use a 60/80mm convertor (same airflow, MUCH lower noise), or get a PAL8045 for $30 from svcompucycle.com which accepts 80mm fans right onto it and is arguably the best heatsink on the market for cost and performance :). Slap a Panaflo L1A onto one and you have 24cfm at 21db :)! Same thing if you use an adapter, although not QUITE as efficient (small loss of efficiency happens with the adapters) although probably cheaper.

Getting the Arkua 7528 instead causes no additional dollar.

A 80mm fan blowing 40 CFM air will be quieter than the 70mm fan of the same flow rate. It is 3000 rpm vs. 5000 rpm. However, the 60 to 80mm fan adapter will cost $15 (plastic) to $25 (aluminium) shipped. Not very cost effective.

Umm... Alpha PAL8045, guys ;) Best damned HSF in the world, besides the +$30 Swiftech MC462.

Excellent input, thanks folks. :D

Thermite...too late! The 7228 is in the mail...I'll just have to make do. I thought doubling the "noise" was 4db? Ah well, it doesn't matter much, I'm looking for an inexpensive 60->80 adapter now so i can throw a Panaflow or something similar on it.

GT, My Arkua is costing me less and I think it was reviewed as being a bit more effective than the 8045 (by 1 whopping degree at Cluboc....tied the Swiftech MCX462).

To tell you the truth, it just looks nifty too...and I won't be installing case mods either. *sigh* Nothing's rational anymore. ;)

Edit: Ooops...it's Cluboc.net

newegg.com sells nice, low profile machined aluminum 60mm-80mm fan adaptors for $16. just do a search for adaptor. the arkua's are pretty nice, but i couldn't imagine them outperforming an alpha 8045. that review looks like *cough*BS*cough*. look at it! the silver mountain is ahead of the sk-6! wtf?!? something wasn't done properly there. was the alpha setup properly? was the fan blowing or sucking? was the sk6 installed with grape jelly instead of ASII accidentally? no documentation on how the tests were performed, besides for a little spiel. looks fishy to me.

here are some more reviews: frostytech's and
amdmb's copper heatsink roundup they show the cooler being very good (amdmb shows it being about on par with the sk-6, which makes sense), but not as good as cluboc shows. i think you made a good hsf choice, but it ain't no 8045 slayer (pardon my vernacular).
