Gf's parents and grandparents want to get me something for xmas and gave me a budget to stay within for the parents and grandparents. I have a few thoughts, but one of them that I've wanted is a better HSF than my Scythe (although I like it a lot, it was one that was a compromise due to the previous case and needs to stick with my old case and the system going in it). I would like to go water cooling, but would only do it if I did the video card as well and frankly I don't want to spend the money on it currently.

So, I've pretty much narrowed it down to the Noctua D14 or C14 but am torn between the two. This will go in an FT02 case, and looks are important along with keeping in mind the sideways rotation issues and heatpipes. So which looks better for a nice big windowed case, and which is better? I don't have high profile memory currently, but have thought about so that is a future concern as well. Maybe the U12 is a better option then?

I'm slightly biased but I love my D14.

D14 is the best air cooler. I thought Silver Arrow was better but I read a review where they pumped a lot of voltage in the CPU and the D14 kept going strong while the Silver Arrow just couldn't keep up.

Yes again bright white lights as a backdrop. Your case is not going to be that bright. It will look much darker

I would go with these depending on usage. On any of the coolers over the fans they come with

Noctua NF-F12 120 x 25mm PWM Fan

Well, I sent the gf the xmas list to give to her family. First on it was the Phanteks red HSF (gave an alternate of the D14 which is about $20 cheaper), second is some stuff to crimp and make custom length cables from MDPC-X, third stuff sitting in my Amazon wishlist. I had put in some other stuff too, but hopefully I can knock two of those three off the "need-to-buy list" :p

huh? The noctua is louder unless you use U.L.N.A (which undervolts the fans). And if you do that it losses by an even larger margin.

Well, I just went through several reviews, and with stock config, they were either very close or the Phantek was 4-5db louder, so I'm not sure where you are seeing your acoustic comparisons.
