I haven't booted in over four months, the last time I installed software. Why shut your computer off? I don't know much about Linux, but suspend/resume works flawlessly on Windows.

mm, those must have happened in the middle of the night automatically. the last time I personally had to reboot was over four months ago. Waiting several seconds for a resume isn't bad, no matter how fast one's professor may talk.

Hey guys I'm very seriously considering this machine, simply because of it's shear beauty!

I do alot of typing, and the EEE keyboard is just too small, but I was about to buy one.

Anyhow, HOW WOULD THE 1.2GHZ DO FOR MS POWERPOINT CREATION?
If you guys say acceptable, I'll order one asap and post a review!

Thanks punchkin, I read over your posts and you don't seem to be a guy who spews mindless drivel just for the sake of internet anonymity.

If a couple more people agree with you I'll be thrilled! That dang PCmark score though, it's just ssoooo low. I mean come on, isn't that around the era of 6-700mhz Pentium III's?

I too submit that they really should have used another processor. I'm afraid in a year, when more of the ultra-low voltage, ultra-low cost CPU's show up with actually half-way respectable performance, this thing will be worth hardly anything...because of one reprehensible component choice.

Anyhow, I still want to pull the trigger... convince me!

Well, itll provide "acceptable" performance now, and somewhat less than "acceptable" performance next year, but it wont be useless. Still, in order for me to even remotely consider a system at this point, it needs to at least be able to match up to a 1ghz P3. I question whether the HP mini can even handle a fullscreen youtube video. Based upon the benchmarks and comments that "webpages loaded slower than expected" really question the wisdom of buying a system that is basically already obsolete. It doesnt need to be a core 2 duo by any means, but I'd prefer something a little more future-proof, because otherwise, it's *perfect*.

Well I love my current laptop, it was a $299 Special at Office Depot - 1.6Ghz Dual-core Pentium, 1Gb Ram, 15.4'', Vista Home Premium. I swear it's as fast if not faster than my 2.9 Ghz AM2 Opteron.

I really want something super portable for class, but also something I can do some prolonged typing/viewing on. At first glance this thing was *perfect*, but now I'm unsure. Price is also a big concern, it has to be under $550, the less the better.

By the way, sorry if this is turning into a threadjack, just keeping it alive!

So, is the overwhelming consensus for value, performance, and portability still the Asus EEE PC?

im waiting to see if the 9" model *does* come with the intel atom and under the $500 mark.

if it delivers, ill sell my t40, get an lcd/kb/mouse to go with the thing and virtualize windows from my tower (as i only use windows for homework these days, damn office!)

What I'm waiting to see is if the 9" model has the resolution of the 7" model, or is higher resolution... well, that and what you're waiting to see too. A 9" with slightly higher resolution, with an Atom, under $500... only thing better would be a HDD instead of flash drive - strictly for more capacity. What can I say... I'm a storage capacity junkie.

Yep - looks sweet. I'm still thinking that the eee's keyboard is a little bit too small, but the resolution is finally usable. The eee's processor is still quite meh, but then again, it's cheaper than the HP mini.

This is just the first gen of the cheap ultraportables. I'm expecting by xmas this year there will be some solid choices, and hopefully some solid competition driving down prices even further.

I bought one of these, for anyone wondering about the processor, it is capable of basic tasks. I watched a 640X480 wmv file on it full screen and it looked great. web browsing runs fine, I think it's pretty snappy for what I use it for. I got the linux version and put xp on it. I have the 1.2ghz model with 1gb of ram. I plan on swapping in a 2gb stick next week, but 1gb seems fine, I'm sure an extra gig won't hurt anything of course.

I really like the pc though, if you plan on running really intensive apps you should probably get a bigger laptop, but this is the best option in it's category right now, I think it's a much higher quality feeling machine than the eee pc. when the 9" eee comes out it will have some competition, but even then the keyboard on the 2133 is much nicer. and I prefer the 120 gig hard drive to the small ssd hard drive/s on the eee pcs
