if i get really comfortable with using PDA, mb i'll invest in one of these. Has MS beaten Palm for real this time? would kind of suck because the palm seems to do what it does pretty well.

MS has had Palm for lunch ever since the 1910 launched about 2 years ago. And with Sony now gone from the PDA biz in the US, it's pretty much a closed deal

Pocket Pc is too complicated IMO for a hand held, my clie nx73 does everything i throw(wifi and all) and i love the keyboard

If you think a PocketPC is too complicated, then you shouldn't be on Anandtech. You should be at Mac Land or Mac Zone or some place like that😛

I am all for the latest functionality and stuff but if I need to scroll thru 10 menus to write down a phone number and what not, that is not my cup of tea,

Anyway its a matter of use and preference, I got past the cool factor of my pda on the 3rd day and use it just to write numbers/calendar and the occasional surfin or pics and find it very convenient

Bah...my PDA is my PC away from home.

I use it for GPS. I have a Bluetooth GPS in my car which sits on my dash and my iPAQ on my air vent (Pic here)
I sync wirelessly to my desktop through Bluetooth
I surf wirelessly in my house or at hot spots
I check my email
I use ICQ and AIM when away from home wirelessly
I've got my contacts, calander, handle my finances through Pocket Money
I've got BetaPlayer for MP3, OGG, DIVX, AVI
I've got Windows Media Player for ASF, ASX, WMV, WMA
I've got NYDITOT for screen rotation and screen rez up to 1024x768
And I've got about 25 other programs loaded that I use for various things.

But the best thing is having file system compatibility with my desktop so that I can stream music, movies, documents wireless throughout my house and out in the yard

i can do ALL that and MUCH more on my Tablet PC. PLUS i have a 10.5 screen on this one. i run 1028 x 768 native resolution. it's 3 lbs. it has wireless built in.

for me, my PDA is basically just for scheduling, addresses and carrying pictures of my kids around.

I can't carry a Tablet PC in my pants pocket or mount it on my dash 🙂

And my iPAQ weighs 4.8 ounces 😛

i have an older Toshiba Tablet PC. it was before they started putting 14" screens on tablet PC's. seems kind of pointless to me to put a 14" screen on a TabletPC.

me?

actually, i use my tablet PC more as a laptop (it's a convertible and not a slate). i find the stylus to be a little slow.

it is nice to be able to use the tablet when keyboards are inconvenient tho. i use MapPoint and like having my tablet PC with me when i'm driving somewhere i haven't been.

Speaking of hotspots, do you know where any are in Raleigh? Near crossroads I see these big poles that are too big to be redlight cameras or street lights. I hope they are for wireless internet!

Nice, Hopefully I'll be going to NCSU. I have been a huge fan all of my life.

I heard the all of downtown was suppose to be going wireless too?

Sorry for getting off topic!

Not when starbucks is right across the street from NCSU's totally wireless network and I can leech 😉

Its something ridiculous like 39.99 a month for t-mobile hotspots (what you get in starbucks).

That being said, there hasnt been a decent pda made since the ipaq 1910. That of course includes the 1940. All these new ones are fugly. The 1910 was a work of art, tiny, a great design, and a beautiful screen.

Aside from that, PDAs are awesome on paper, but most people I know that have them, including myself, find them to be cute toys that get old after a while. Theyre good for a lot of things, but great for nothing but scheduling and contacts. Sure, they can play movies, but not very well. Theyre fairly terrible portable mp3 players too, and believe me Ive been using them for that purpose since the original jornada. They need to come with remotes to be taken seriously in that regard. Surfing the web on them is more trouble than its actually worth on the tiny ass screen, as most sites cant format themselves properly for it. Iming is cool, but unless youre at a hotspot its not much of a possibility.

GPS is a pretty killer app for it though. But PDAs are on the way out. Smartphones are going to totally take over. Eventually they'll come up with a design that lets you get the best of both worlds. The new treos and motorola smartphones are getting pretty close. What PDAs/Smartphones really need to take off is affordable, fast internet that is covered everywhere your cell phone is. Then portable IMing, emailing and surfing will become more of a reality for most people.

Uhhh, the iPAQ 4150 is the ultimate 1910. It's the same form factor and basic shape/design (both designed by the same company, Winstrom), only about .3 ounces heavier, and has a 400MHz processor, SDIO, Bluetooth and WiFi.

The 4150 is the 1910 on crack

Must have mistaken that one in my mind for the 4350, the one with the keyboard. Looks very nice. But it doesnt look like theyre continuing that trend unfortunately.

Now THAT is what I am waiting for. Smartphone that opens both ways (vertically and horizontally), full qwerty keyboard, wifi and bluetooth, a touchscreen, an SD slot, and a 1.3 megapixel camera. I cant imagine anything that can top this.

Too cumbersome for a phone...screen to small for a PDA. I'll stick to my 4150 and LG VX3100

Its got a 2.8 inch screen, which is not that much smaller than your average PDA's screen. Its about the size of the sprint palm phone or treo, which is quite manageable. But considering it has bluetooth, and considering its likely starting price, if you cant afford a bluetooth headset, you probably cant afford the phone. 😛

It looks like perfection to me.
