Having a house built and I need some help on my network plans.
First of all I have two routers.
SMC Barricade 4 port (wired)
SMC ???model # (wireless) ? basically a p.o.c. but I?ll hang on to it until I get something better.
Probably going to use cat6.
Thinking of putting the SMC wired router/cable modems/etc.in a walk in closet. The cable modem will be connected to the wired router and then wired to two pc?s in the same room. Any concern for heat???
Side Note: Anyone know if the electricians would run power to a closet? I?m gonna ask them but I thought someone here may know.
The wireless router will go in the great room on top of an audio receiver cabinet. It will be hard wired to the wired router in the closet.
This way the wireless router will be as close to the center of the house as possible.
Only use will probably be my laptop.</FONT>
Any input/advice is welcome.
Any ideas on accessories to help make all of this look as nice and organized as possible is appreciated.

Run two cat5e or cat6 wires to every room (more is better, sometimes two connections on each side of the room) to a central locations.

You're all set.

I ran 3 cat5e to each room, 2 for data, 1 for phone and 1 coax for TV.

When I built my house, I had the builder add a wiring closet. This is really just a recessed cabinet in one of the closets in my house. All my internal connections - cable, phone, and networking, etc. - are connected through the box. Heat buildup has not been a problem.

For networking, I have both my cable modem an 8-port router in the wiring closet, with 8 ethernet jacks spread out through the house (one in each of four bedrooms, two in my bonus room, one in my family room and one in the kitchen.

I have my WAP in my bonus room, which is on the far edge of my house. I have no problems getting a strong signal anywhere in my home, or outside (such as on my porch and deck) for that matter.

There are companies which sell wiring boxes, such as Home Director (http://www.homedirector.com/) and OnQ (http://www.onqtech.com/). FYI, I installed a Home Director system in my house (it was started by some ex-IBM employees and, since I work for IBM, I thought I'd send my business their way).
