In February 2007, Guinness World Records certified the bhut jolokia (Prof. Bosland's preferred name for the pepper) as the world's hottest chili pepper.

I knew that the Red Savina Habanero was found to be the champ back in 1994 by Guinness World records but have never heard of this Bhut Jolokia.

Here's a nice description from a seed company in the UK

In 2001, The Chile Pepper Institute received seed of a chilli named 'Bhut Jolokia' from a member who had collected it while visiting the area of Assam in India. So Four years of extensive field tests by The Institute the 2005 heat test was on. The heat test recorded the Bhut Jolokia chilli at a staggering, lip numbing, mind blowing 1,001,304 Scoville Heat Units by the Chile Pepper Institute and the Bih Jolokia chilli tested at 1,041,427 by Frontal Agritech the famous Assamese Chilli Growers.

Good god! I've seen tests that put the Red Savina at about half a million. It seems impossible to have doubled the previous record.

That means it takes 1,001,304 squirts of milk from a bottle to be able to cool your mouth down again.

Jesus, I wonder if you tastebuds would go back after that.

This is old news, unless I'm missing something.

I can't wait to meet some people who claim to eat bhut jolokias raw like popcorn.

I think it was the older hottest pepper that they had on Top Gear. They said you just lightly touch it against the food and its enough. That would be pure agony to eat.

Yeah, you can't really eat anything that hot. Peppers like that you drop one in a pot of chili when it's cooking and then take it out before serving.

It may be old news but I searched AnandTech and it had'nt been posted.
I'm downloading a video at the moment HERE that shows a guy eating a Naga Morich, which is the same type of pepper.

Does anyone here know the record for Habanero eating? Last time I checked it was at 9 or 10.

I've eaten three habaneros at one time, but I don't know if I could handle one of those!

Yeah, sorry, I got fooled by the word new and thought the "new" one was even newer than the assam pepper.

I don't understand how the Red Savina was considered the hottest at about 250k SHU when the Orange Habanero is about 350k SHU?

I once touched my eye after handling a habanero. This was HOURS later actually... after washing my hands multiple times... in the middle of the night. I instinctively rubbed my eye in my sleep and... well... for a few minutes thought I was going to go blind or something. Fvck did that hurt. I ended up filling the sink with cold water and dunking my head in with my eye open for like half an hour. :p

You would probably die anyway. A million on the Scoville scale is, well, pretty damn hot.

You'd probably be fine for about 30 seconds. Then you cry for about an hour.

At least that's what popping habeneros is like.

I know about the Scoville scale, but Dumb and Dumber has nothing to do with this other than an unknown hot candy or chile that someone eats. Like I said, on the movie, they look like "Hot Tamales cinnamon" candy that they put on the burger. Hot Tamales candy, which are like flavored cinnamon candy and are not hot at all.

You can never tell what they are actually eating on a prop.

However if that stunt was pulled in real life, the reaction could be similar.

EDIT:

Just like in this famous scene you know that's not really a Laxative that Jeff Daniels is drinking. :Q

"I have already created history on Indian television by munching 60 of the chilies in two minutes. I am more than confident of creating a record once I reach London."

WTF...that's like a pepper every two seconds!

I'd eat one

ate 3 Habeneros once, my entire body was on fire. Was the first food I ate that actually caused me to feel pain. was interesting to say the least. A bet I wish I hadn't taken but I did win $50 bucks, too bad I felt like I was going to pass out for the next 3 hours.
