New hotmail sucks and something I wish web developers would cut the hell out already.

Unlike the old hotmail which had a dynamic link, within your inbox, for each message, the new hotmail finds itself in the need of using javascript on the links. So, instead of being able to right click a link and open in a new window you have to click the link and have javascript populate a stupid form on the page and that form's submission is how a link is opened. more and more sites are doing this and it buggarly bothers the sh*t out of me. The reason is that with hotmail for instance if I have 3 legit emails within 10 total (rest spam garbage), I'd generally right click and open all 3 in their own windows to read and then delete the others in my primary window. Now though I have to manually go through each one I want and then in a long contrived, 15 minute process, delete the other 7!

Plus, you can't log in to hotmail now and see how many emails you have without going the extra step to click on the MAIL button. Hotmail blows me!

I'm sorry if you read this far.

This forum needs one of those nifty 'star rating' systems so people can know to click on posts like this one!

Only reason I use hotmail over other freemail is because I can check it with Outlook Express. Hotmail's the only place I've had an email address start getting spammed when it has never been used and they make so little effort to reduce spam it's not funny. Turned on the bulk mail filter for awhile, half my legit email ended up in there.

And yet, I do just about all my email through hotmail these days because I refuse to be tied to an ISP email address.

Same reason I use it. I'd like to switch to yahoo, but everyone knows me with hotmail and I still use MSN messenger, so I'll put up with it.

What bothers me is that damn redirect when you try to login or out. When you go to hotmail.com, it loads up a blank page, waits for a second, then redirects you to the login page. Very annoying, especially if you have hotmail as your homepage (not anymore, though!).

This is all part of the Micro$haft empire! And why you need to buy office 2003. It incorperate HTML mail, specifically Hotmail, as just another mailbox. It works, looks and acts just like a POP mail box but links to Hotmail! :)

I'm a web developer (J2EE) and the reason this is done, is because you normally have some sort of error checking before you follow the link. And that's where javascript comes into play.

Yeah they do that here too at work. It's easier to make and gives you all of the form fields, but for the user damn I find it annoying!

It's not so bad if you have a spam-eliminating program like Mailwasher. Run it before you head into your inbox and you're clear of spam so you can do your business.

The one extra step (TODAY screen) to get into the inbox IS annoying though.

BTW, what other "more and more" sites use JS to do what you're saying ? I'd like to see.

I've never used Hotmail a day in my life from all of the things I've read of it. I use a $20 a year service that suits me well.

*Goes to see The Horror(TM)* Good gawd, man! That is nasty alright!! Everything javascripted from the look of it. Gah, can't read or even delete messages behind Webwaher, now! Yeah, this totally blows.

MS should be flogged using a hardcopy of the ME kernel for this. :|

Skoorb I don't agree with you much but here I do.

I royally -hate- when people use Javascript for links because I often use the right click->new tab on links. I -hate- when a site opens a popup. Who said I wanted you to open another window? I like Eric Raymond's rant that it should STAY within the same window.

On another note, does anyone find it funny they are using Javascript not JScript (and J2EE not ASP .Net?) for their stuff now? :)

I was just thinking that, OP. I usually open 4 or 5 emails in new windows, now I have to go one at a time. This sucks. And the hotmail home page only shows me the new email I have from contacts. That sucks too. Oh well.

I agree. The new Hotmail sucks a$$. It totally sucks when I'm using firebird and I can't open my new emails in new tabs. It's really starting to piss me off. I've had that account for over 4 years now, and I think I might have to switch to Lycos Mail which has 5 mb of storage (compared to 2 for HM).

Why did Hotmail change the links to Javascript? I fail to see any benefits. What other email services do this (I know Lycos doesn't)? Also, is it even possible that Hotmail will change this in the near future?
