NEW hotmail account got SPAM!!! WHY?

I registered a new hotmail account on 12/3/00. I used this email to place an order at Buy.com at the same night and registered an account at Onvia.com on 12/4/00.

Today - 12/5/00, I received two SPAM mails in this account. Do you know why? Buy.com or Onvia.com? Or...???

There is a hotmail members directory. Spam makers just send it to those people, so it's a hotmail thing not Buy.com or Onvia.

I've had and used my Hotmail acct. for over 2 months, and not one piece of Spam...

It does seem kind of an on/off thing with hotmail. I only get spam once in a while, but a friend gets like twenty spam messages everyday.

It all depends on what you sign up for and submit your email for. I don't sign up for anything, so therefore I get no spam

Also they just have huge wordlists of common names and combinations I think. Cause one account(that I never use and didnt sign up for anything with) isnt listed in the directory but it gets spammed like crazy every day, while my other two more abnormal emails hardly ever get spammed.

Yeah a lot of companies know that hotmail is a major email service so they just put together some common names and numbers and send them out. And unless I am mistaking hotmail has this new program that blocks out spam. You might wanna try that.

Their little spam blocker blocks alot of stuff, but the damn spammers found a way around it...I've had hotmail for years and I didnt start to get alot of spam up until recently...

I didn't sign up for anything as well. It did ask for members directory stuff and I uncheck that too. Wonder why....?

I think the only possibility is that random names SPAM.

Also, if your login name isn't totally obscure, you might not have been the first person to have it. For example, I signed up sohcahtoa@hotmail.com to use for spam and it got HAMMERED before I ever gave it out. I'm sure I'm not the only person ever to think of using sohcahtoa, and hotmail accounts lapse after brief periods of inactivity - that, and random email generators probably picked it up years ago.
