New Homeowner

So I decided to buy a house since the market is so good right now. Moving in next weekend. Was walking around Home Depot with the gf and started realizing how much "house stuff" I'm going to need.

A little background, I'm 22 years old, last 4-5 years have been living in dorms and apartments. Not the handiest guy in the world (but willing to learn) so I don't really even have a basic set of tools. On the bright side, house is only 4 years old, so I'm hoping there isn't too much that'll break.

So any suggests are welcome, and discussion is not limited to just tools. Just hoping to get a list of stuff I'll need.

To kick things off, I know I'm going to need a lawn mower almost immediately after moving in.

Add to your lawn mower a Weed eater, edger, leaf blower/rake.

Hose, sprayer and sprinkler.

Grill.

You can probably just get a few tool sets to get you started, a cordless drill/screw driver will come in handy.

AC air filters are good to have on hand.

garbage cans. hoses, rake, shovels, tools etc.

also go to auctions, garage sales. you can get good items cheap

I would say a set of tools should be a priority. Hammer, screwdriver set and pliers at the very least.

Rank everything from 1 to 5 in terms of how badly you need it or how essential it is. Buy the highest ranked stuff first.

after getting caught once in a new place without any tp, that is the first thing that gets moved in. usually comes in the front door on the first trip in with all my paperwork for the place i am moving into.

4 years old, depending on the build quality, can be anywhere from rock solid to ready to fall over. Regardless, grats on the new place!

For tools:
A hammer, a couple sizes of pliers, a set of open-end wrenches, and an adjustable wrench. A hacksaw and possibly a small (wood) hand saw, and a few philips and flat screwdrivers of varying sizes.

A preferrably cordless drill with a large bit assortment (including screw heads), a decent socket set (metric and standard). Buying separately if needed, adapters to allow you to use your sockets on the drill and screw bits in the ratchet.

Rolls of:
Teflon tape (used for sealing threaded pluming connections
Electrical tape
Duct tape (just in case - Gorilla tape's also nice)

Superglue. Wood glue. Some all purpose cement/glue.

An assortment pack of metal screws. An assortment pack of wood screws. A roll of string.

A handy toolbox to carry it all in (don't pay more forh the per-tool carriers on most things. Notable exceptions might be the drill and socket set, or if they're compact (like often found for open-end wrenches).

I went through the same situation you're going through almost a year ago. here's what i have found so far:

hire a gardener if you can afford it...i thought i'd save money buy doing it myself, and i have, but it's a nuisance especially if you have a big backyard. a weed wacker is also good. you don't need a blower right now...get that later. buy a rake instead and don't be lazy.

i assume you have basic home furnishings (towels n stuff) so I won't go there. if you don't, well that's why you have a gf

get a grill...even a small portable one...and a couple kegs of beer so you never run dry.

basic tools - screwdrivers, hammers, etc would be good. home depot usually has basic kits for pretty cheap.

garden hose if you don't have one. also stock up on ant killer

i really can't think of many more essentials. most of the things come down to home furnishings, so just give your gf your credit card, tap a keg, then tap another keg when you see how much she spent

#1: Go to ebay regularly so you'll always have a 10% off Home Depot coupon sitting around at all times. 20% off coupons can be had too, but cost more, so I usually save them for big purchases.

Over the course of the year you'll save a ton.
