Last weekend I finally got around to buying some crossover cable to hook up my parents computer to their laptop and I hooked up my two home computers (all of them had unused NICs that came with the computers). They both had the same problem - unwanted modem dialing.
Parents computers:
They have a WinXP desktop and a WinXP laptop. I followed the WinXP home network setup word for word and everything works well - file sharing, printing, etc. But every 15 seconds the desktop (which is plugged into the phone line) tries to dial to the internet if the crossover cable is hooked up. I disabled everything on the laptop and it still dials every 15 seconds. If they aren't connected then neither computer attempts to dial.
My computers. They are both desktops, both have modems, but one is WinXP and the other is Win98se. I again followed the WinXP home network setup word for word. They are always connected and the network works just fine. But if I attempt to transfer files then one or both computers tries to connect to the internet. Or if I dial the internet on one, the second tries to dial as well.
Any suggestions?
Note: I won't be able to try the fixes for awhile (I'm at school, and my parents live 80 miles away), but I'll print out a list of all your suggestions and try them next weekend.
