Ok, I'm a college student and I've worked out my expenses. After my new computer, 200 for next quarter at college, money for books, and enough money for christmas shopping.

Now, I'm gonna have about 300 bucks left over and I've decided I'm going to get into RC cars. I don't know where to start though. After finals end on wednesday and I get back so southern california I'm going to visit hobby shops and such.

Before then though, can you guys give me sites that sell RC cars and info on them and such? I'm not pro, so I'm not gonna start from scratch. I'm thinking a kit or something and upgrading as I learn about what I'm doing. I'd like some general pricing info and stuff.

Thanks guys!

Good links,

Before you buy, decide:
If you want to race, and if there's a track nearby. If yes for both, go there and check out the environment (the age of the kids).
If you want on-road or off-road.

Consider the surfaces where you plan to run. If there's no track (or you don't care about it), buy the car according to the surfaces you have. Off-road buggies work well on clean dirt, but that's hard to find. I have one, and I cannot run on my yard during the summer. Off-road tires do not last on hard-surfaces. A truck should work better on grass. Maybe an on-road car will work better for (any clean parking lot will do, and there's always a new one on campus).

Rally cars maybe be a good intermediate solution. I was planning to buy an used chassis, but they're a hard to find for a decent price (e-bay is useless, crazy ppl there).

Electric is a bit cheaper and easier to maintain, but runs are around 4-5 mins only. Assembling a kit is fun. Maintaining the car can be fun also, but if you don't like mechanical/electrical stuff, find another hobby.

It's really fun, but I never got the investment back. If possible, try before you buy.

RC racing is fun. I have an off road buggy (Losi XXX) and its great fun. I want to get into the smaller, AWD cars, but not quite yet.

Anyone want to buy a Losi XXX? All build, ready to run...

I have a rally and i can race mine on both road , dirt, and grass. Mine is 1/8th scale, though, and can handle grass. I also jacked up my ride height to accomate on and off road.

whats the deal in surgance w/RC lately? I used to be in it, lets see... about 10 years ago. My pop and I build my car up, we raced it quite a bit... indoors only, even though it was ment for outdoors... modded it up bigtime. simply because my car was a beast to begin with, everyone tried bumping me off the road, and it worked too, untill we threw some new 'fin' bumbers on it... took the stock front bumper, and made a new one that was curved so it wouldnt get hung up on the walls... then thew a big piece of plastic underneath it, so the other cars couldnt even approach my tires. it was slick... i threw so many cars off the track, over the walls, etc... hehehe won a LOT of races... trophies, etc...

then one day, at a campground, i took it racing on a dirt track with a street motor in it, and poof. no more racing for intake.

I got pics somewheres, but I dont feel like finding them.

LOL, i have a K&N filter on my car, so no dirt gets in that bad boy. What happened? Did you burn up the engine or score it?

Electic don't last 10 mins. The Kyosho Mini-Zs last an hour with 4 AAA batteries.

Burned it up REAL good. Melted the rear transmission casing.... sad thing was, I still l won the race. ah, such is the life of an RC Racer. One stupid race that lasts too long, on terrain that your motor isnt geared for... and tere you have it.
