New High School Schedule. Mondays kids are released at 1:50pm

OutHouse

errrr. not sure how i feel about this, apparently this is for all schools in the district. Every Monday all kids are being released at 1:50, then T-F released at the normal time 3:45.

the reason is below, cut and paste from the district website.

What are the primary reasons for implementing an Early-Release schedule on Mondays?
The primary reasons for implementing early release Mondays are professional development for our faculty and staff and improving student achievement. The federal and state governments have increased mandates on educators in the past few years by changing learning standards and requiring
more rigorous, high-stakes assessments. In order to effectively implement these changes, educators require time to learn new information and collaboratively work together to determine how best to implement changes. Regular professional development opportunities show better results than one-day trainings occurring at distant intervals in time across the calendar. The result of professionally developing our staff is improving outcomes for our students.

But hey why didnt the school board get parents input?

Was the public explicitly asked to provide input on the school calendar?
The development of the school calendar has historically been a decision made at the recommendation of school staff. Community input has not been sought in the past. Given the nature of the change to the calendar, district administration felt it was necessary to communicate and solicit feedback yet not lead people to believe that this was a decision made by the public. Thus, the district chose to solicit feedback from the District Accountability Committee, School Accountability Committees, PTOs, and have the
information on the website with an avenue for commenting or asking questions. School principals were also asked to use avenues of communication that they felt would be appropriate for their community of parents.

They did that for a while in Fairfax County (NoVA) for all grades (or at least elementary). Just got rid of it for next school year as parents complained every year.

My son starts K next year, perfect timing. 🙂

Translation: We're scheduling wine and cheese parties for Monday afternoons to reduce the frequency of the faculty calling in sick on Mondays to get a long weekend.

Next they will decide that teacher training is more important than educating the kids. Hmmm... doesn't sound too good to me. Why *every* Monday, why not just whenever it's needed?

By my senior year of highschool I was only doing a half day as it was, done by noon EVERY day.

I had early dismissal senior year as well since I finished the majority of my needed classes already. They quickly got rid of that the year after I left lol.

My high school thought it would be a great idea to completely get rid of the attendance policy for my senior year. The old policy was 15 lates or 5 absences was an automatic Loss of credit for the course unless you had doctors notes. For my senior year there were no limits on missed days and no need for doctor notes (you could bring them in to clear the days, but since there was no punishment for having the days against you...meh)

With my already half days there were many times I'd just take the whole day off. Still managed As and Bs on my finals and got a 4 on my AP psychology test, so it worked out alright.

The year after I graduated though they brought the loss of credit policy back in place.

Of course they did....gotta have the free babysitting service, even for those that shouldn't be in a regular public school setting.

dont get me started on, parent teacher conference on wed and thurs, then Friday no school due to "teachers in service"....

School should be 8am - 8pm. Parents deserve a couple of hours of peace and quiet when they get home. And then maybe we would be better than 38th in math and 35th in science.

Students should be sent away to education camps where parents can't force their own fucked up habits and views upon their kids.

you normally post intelligent and well thought out stuff, but on this one you utterly failed.

I should have said 'some parents', sorry.

There are 'some' (more than one) parents that have literally been called because their child is completely out of control and the parent refused to pick up the child because the child was 'on your time, not mine' (real quote).

Also, no child left behind has placed kids in schools that have no earthly idea why they are there. They should be in special schools if in school at all. No child left behind is holding every child in school behind because of policies like this.

Sorry you don't like it, but it's the truth.

By the way, I was not approving or disapproving of the school letting out at 1:50, simply stating that people are what they are and don't always want to use thing for the way they were intended.

I never did half a day but I did take two English classes the first semester to finish the graduating requirements and took the 2nd semester off completely.

We had half days on Wednesday. Then when you were in high school half the damn sophomores and seniors had half block and went home. No wonder why this country is dumb!

I still don't understand the 'one size fits all' style of education that we have. I went to one of the best public school systems in the nation and I'm sure a policy like this would have had negligible results there. However, there are plenty of districts where I'm sure this kind of change would lead to some negative trends.

Although, it sounds like my public school system was much more strict than some others described in this thread. We couldn't leave for our 30 minute lunch period, you were punished for being even a few seconds late in between periods, and there was a zero tolerance policy for skipping classes. Unless a parent called you out, you would have Saturday school or an in school suspension.

Wait, don't they already get summers off? Maybe they should pepper in the 40 hrs of training then and cut it to 30 min a couple times a week... after regular school hours. That'd still put them in line with the standard 8-5 schedule.

Lazy asses.

Meh we had this growing up all throughout school. Still do. Guess it is pretty common in WA. Our school it was early release Wednesdays.

But the teachers let students stay and get each tutoring, help on projects, access to computers, open gym, or all sorts of other stuff. They used the time basically to help students who wanted to be there or just to have fun. Was a great time ot stay after and do projects and essays as the teachers would sit down and help or correct grammer and spelling (which i needed tons of help with!)

So guess it just depends how the school systems are using it

I agree. Teachers are always complaining about how little they get paid, why don't we just pay them more and have something for them to do year round? They'll get 2-4 weeks off just like everyone else. We can also lengthen the school year so that only August is off.

You have no idea how many teachers would rather not be getting some of these inservices & would much rather be in their classroom teaching.
