Do I need to spend a lot of money on a DVI to HDMI cable to get the benifits of using this type of cable? which one do u guys suggest?

For info my tv is the samsung 5088 and it has all the different type of video hook ups. I hooked all of them up and the diff. in quaility is astounding. from low to high in video quility was
1.RF cable
2.vieo input yellow - audio red and white
3.s-video
4.component video - red, blue, green. (very nice picture)
5.same quaility as component video. Now my dvi-hdmi cable is the one from the cable company and it was sixteen bucks and it looks and feels cheap. however it does give a picture as good as my monster cable component video. every now and then there seems to be a little interferance in the singnal.

What cable out there is the best value. I dont want to pay for something I dont need.

I understand that the DVI to HDMI is an all digital signal and that the others must turn it into an analog first to transmit and then the tv turns it back into a digital and if so then it would seem that the DVI-HDMI should give a better quality picture.

Component (properly done) vs. DVI/HDMI is an argument that will probably never go away. You can head over to AVSForum.com and look in their forums there and see what I'm talking about.

HDMI is basically DVI in a different format, along with audio on the same cable bundle. It's designed to cut down on the amount of wires one needs. Also, DVI could carry HDCP however I really haven't heard of many devices that do that. So, if that's a worry for you, then HDMI is the way to go.

As far as cabling goes, don't spend stupid amounts of money on high end DVI-DVI, DVI-HDMI, or HDMI-HDMI cables. It's a digitial signal, so as long as the 0's and 1's get there like their supposed to, it doesn't really matter. Component it does matter if your cables are quality, as the signal going over them is analog.

Personally I like the DVI connector for desktops and TV's, since it just feels more hardier you know? HDMI connectors just don't seem to have that german engineering type of feel to them like DVI has...

Hope this helps!

I bought one for $10 at surplus computers. I was going to use VGA or DVI->HDMI, as my HDTV is hooked up to a PC. I would guess that either VGA or DVI would be better than component, but dont have any info to support that. I'm sure you could look it up.

When I first got my 32" Syntax LCD TV (which I also use as my dedicated PC monitor), I used the included VGA cable. The quality wasn't that bad at all, and it looked very good.

I did get a DVI-DVI cable though, and once I used that, I could tell between switching between them that the DVI was a little bit sharper - not imagination either, it definitely - by a small but noticable amount - sharper.

Just my one use case experience, results I'm sure vary...

Again, AVSForum.com is your friend...
