Components:

MSI P6N SLI Platinum
Q6600
4GB Patriot 800MHz 4-4-4-12 @ 2.2V (advertised specs)
Antec Tru-power trio 550W
eVGA 8800GT

Available HDDs

WD2500KS 250GB
WD5000AAKS 500GB
WD7500AAKS 750GB

Configurations:

1.
250GB
ram timings - 4-4-4-12
ram voltage - 2.2V
WORKS

2.
250GB
ram timings - AUTO
ram voltage - AUTO
WORKS

3.
500GB
ram timings - 4-4-4-12
ram voltage - 2.2V
BSOD on boot-up

4.
500GB
ram timings - AUTO
ram voltage - AUTO
BSOD on boot-up

5.
500GB
ram timings - AUTO
ram voltage - 2.2V
usually BSOD on boot-up, boots into windows and works fine when reset!

6.
750GB
ram timings - 4-4-4-12
ram voltage - 2.2V
BSOD on boot-up

7.
750GB
ram timings - AUTO
ram voltage - 2.2V
BSOD on boot-up

So basically, my old 250GB drive works all the time, no matter what I have my ram set to. 750GB works none of the time. And 500GB only works with ram timings set to AUTO and voltage set to 2.2V (stock).

When I take out 2GB of ram ALL HDDS work with ALL ram settings. WTF is going on? Is this Vista's fault?

Are the other drives running a disk image of the original install, or was Vista installed separately to them?

All drives had Vista installed on them from a disc.

I fail.

On a whim I decided to run out and grab a known SATA 3.0 Gb/s cable and see if that was the problem.

It was.

I set it to 4-4-4-12 and it booted right up to windows. I can't believe my MB didn't come with SATA II cables! Moreover, I'm surprised at the odd behavior using SATA I cables and the amount of RAM.

Oh well, thanks for all the help!

well, glad you're up and running, i did not think to ask that, figured the new SATA 2 drives had cables with them.
