Im getting a new drive mainly for video editing. I need a lot of space and my main consideration is price per GB. However, performance would be nice it I'm not going to have to go crazy paying for it. Is this a good drive?

thats the new maxtor.. though its not bad, maxtor is sort of having problems on the market.. dont know the future of maxtor.. on the other hand, you can get an seagate 300/400 gb (on their web) and it offers 5 year warranty

heres one, but you didn't mention if you wanted sata or pata.. the maxtor is sata the seagate is pata

Don't let the 16mb buffer suck you in.

I'd definately look towards Hitachi GS or Seagate for your new drive. The Hitachi 250/400 or Seagate 200/400 is great I think.

Most of the Maxtor drives I've owned have developed bad sectors within about a year of purchase. No data loss yet, but they shouldn't get new ones, other than those mapped off at the factory.

Hitachi....well, see my sig for my dealings with Hitachi.
I had an IBM 120GXP die of a horrible head crash. The 180GXP replacement may be suffering from the infamous click of death.
I've got some Hitachi drives, model HDS722516VLAT80, of the Deskstar 7K250 family. I own 5 of them; one of them, I can read its SMART data direcly, the others are on a Promise SX4000 controller. Anyway, the one standalone drive's SMART is reporting 7 pending sectors; this number matches the Reallocated Sector Count. As I interpret this, there are 7 sectors that are currently going bad, but not enough to count as "bad sectors." A full surface scan confirmed this - but the scan also boosted the number of Raw Read Errors detected. So I figure that this Hitachi drive might be having troubles in the future. I am rapidly losing faith in the IBM/Hitachi brand.

Seagate will be my next choice if these Hitachi's decide to die.
