New HDD Stutters (mouse & sound)!?

I have had this machine for four years.

I have had 4 different boot drives that worked perfectly, some on the regulat IDE channels, some on the ATA/100 channels.

Yesterday I installed a new Maxtor 30gb ATA/100 drive as the master on the primary ATA/100 channel. (There are no other drives on the ATA/100 channels. There are two HDD's and one CD drive on the regular IDE channels).

After installing XP Pro, the mouse and/or sound will stutter every fifteen seconds. (with or without SP1).

ABIT-KT7-RAID (I am not utilizing RAID, nor have I ever)
tbird 1.3ghz
256mb PC133 generic ram

Things that the problem can't be/Things I have tried:

Bios is flashed to most current version.

It is not my SoundBlaster card. Mouse stutters on installs with no sound card. (I have also tried every soundblaster driver and patch).

I have tried all ABIT drivers, including 4in1.

BIOS says my cpu temperature is 111 degrees Farenheit.

Also, I used the Maxtor software to copy my old boot drive to to the new one. Same problems. (My old boot drive still works perfectly).



So, there must be some kind of a hardware issue. Do the ATA/100 'ports' share IDE channels with the 'regular' IDE 'ports'?

My bios shows my three regular IDE drives as being on their own channels, then the HighPoint ATA/100 bios kicks in and shows my new drive as being alone (primary master) on the ATA/100 channel.

Any help would greatly appreciated.

Did you UPDATE the VIA 4in1 drivers?
Did you UPDATE the HIGHPOINT drivers? (a definite must with WinXP)

I believe I have the most updated versions of the 4in1 drivers.

I guess I may not have the most recent HighPoint drivers, actually. I will try that now.

Quick Question: Can the HighPoint and 4in1 drivers be updated in XP, or should I intsall them via floppy disk when installing XP?

(The first thing the XP install cd does is ask for 3rd party ata drivers)

You can UPDATE them after installing the OS.
