New HDD is loud - SMART status and chkdsk show all good...

I had a hard drive recently die on me. I just got the replacement unit yesterday and hooked it up. It works just fine, but it's very loud when active. Normally this means a hard drive is dying, but the SMART status was at 100% across the board. I ran Chkdsk and encountered no problems.

What should I do? Is there a way to quiet it, or should I contact WD about it and try to get a different replacement?

1. it can be dying without showing smart errors
2. it can be loud without dying.
3. if it is an identical model to before, and the previous was quiet and this one is loud, contact WD... no need to mention dying, just say that it is a lot louder then the previous one which bothers you.

I suppose it could be dying. Aside from things like the SMART status and chkdsk, how else could I tell if it's dying?

Also, it's not an identical model. My previous HDD was 320GB, and they sent me a 500GB model.

If the one they sent you was a refurb, then possibly the bearings in it might have some wear on them, although it was primarily the ball-bearing drives that developed a loud whine as time went on, not so much the FDB drives.
