Hey guys, I'm buying a new HDD. It's going to be the WD Carviar 7200rpm ata100 40gb drive.
Right now, i have a maxtor 13gb and fujitso 6gb drive on the normal IDE channel and not sure how fast my maxtor is but I think it's UDMA ATA66, and wondering if I can connect it to my promise controller with the new WD HDD?
I'm getting rid of the Fujitso drive so I'm wondering if I put the WD and maxtor drive on the promise ata 100, will that give me a performance gain???

as i recall, there is not a significant real world performance gain between ata66 and ata100. i run my main (ibm 7200 75gxp) hd from the promise controller on that board. the most gain you will see is if you are running 2 devices from a single ide. it's definitely worthwhile to, if possible, give each device it's own ide port.

I moved my (ATA 100) hd from the ATA66 controller to the promise controller recently.

The main improvement I found was that the time it took to boot into windows decresed by about a minute and a half.

If you currently have slow boot times with your current config you may find a significant improvement on the promise controller
