new hdd help

Need more info. What is your budget? What physical parameters? What usage? Where are you with respect to source choices?

You can't go wrong with seagate or western digital
I wouldn't overthink it, just get whatever your local store has.

but how to know if its 7200rpm

http://rml527.blogspot.com/
here is a comprehensive listing of hard drive models including platter density and rpm.
If performance/price is your primary concern, choose something larger than 500GB.
ie: ST1000DM003 1TB (1/2)
If warranty and possibly reliability(debateable) are your primary concern choose WD black series (they are all 7200rpm, and mostly 500GB/platter).
WD5001AALS-00E3A0 500GB (1/2)
WD1001FALS-00U9B0/00E3A0/00Y6A0 1TB (2/4)
WD1002FAEX-007BA0/00Z3A0/00Y9A0 1TB (2/4)
etc.

If you can't find either of those above, choose whatever else you can find (ie: wd blue which are budget 7200rpm drives)

WD My Passport Edge 500GB is probably the cheapest external HDD from WD I guess because that's the cheapest here in our country and that costs a little over $60 here. I would personally get a bigger capacity HDD because 500GB isn't that big enough these days.

Get a LaCie they use samsung drives and have incredible finish not some plastic like WD ,, its aluminum, etc ... At USB 3.0 I get 170mbps , My hard drives give 100mbps and 150mbps for F4 , so USB 3.0 is a big success. It did my create image in w8, finishes in 30 minutes,, used to create image on other lacie which is esata ,, it was 100mbps to 120mbps.......
