New HD-- SCSI?

Hello,
I'm planning on upgrading to a new comp soon, and I happen to have a schnazzy adaptec 29160/m scsi card.
What I'm looking for is a high performance hd that I can have my OS and progs on. I guess what I'm looking for is a small (~5-10GB) HD that has a fast seek time, but isn't ridiculously noisy. I have an old 7200rpm Barracuda 2GB Scsi drive that is just obnoxiously loud, and it got to the point where I took the thing out because it was just too loud.

What do you guys suggest? I guess I could go ide, but I'm willing to pay more for better performance.

If you got this far, thanks for reading 🙂

lol...i am gonna just sound like the poster freaking kid for scsi but YES just do it already....you'll be glad you did...x15 cheetah....go for it..i ordered two mo yesterday....they still chatter a little but not loud and well i like it

You could get an 18GB Seagate X15-36LP, which is bar far the fastest drive available and costs about $350. They don't make a version smaller than 18GB. Its runs fairly hot and needs get ventilation or a drive cooler, but its alot quieter than the X15.

I current-gen 10K drive may be your best bet. A 9GB Seagate 36XL costs alot less at $175 and the 18GB version just $210. Its cool and quiet.

Wow,
I guess I never realized that SCSI is that expensive. I guess I was planning to spend ~$100, but do you guys think the cheetah is really worth it? I think I'd max at about $200 for a drive. Anyone know of a good deal?

If you are looking for inexpensive drives I would stick with IDE (that pains my SCSI heart to say that I have to admit). One of the big plusses of SCSI is access to the newest and baddest technology (albeit for $$$$$) long before it becomes mainstream and ends up in IDE. Buying older SCSI is not going to justify the investment in SCSI vs the newest IDE.
