New HD as master, old as slave, can't access old data

Hello...

I just installed a new Maxtor 120Gig drive... I set it up as the Master and my old drive as slave. My old drive had 2 partitions and I set the new one up with 2 as well.

On first go around when I installed xp pro, it came up with my new HD as drives K & L (or something like that), and the old C: still as C: and the old D: as something else. I tried shuffling them all around with the disk manager in windows, but couldn't change the drive letter for the partition of the new drive with the os on it. So... I unplugged the old drive and reinstalled windows and got the two partitions as C and D as I wanted, and plugged back in my old drive.

I can now access data on the old drive from the partition that used to be C: ( now called G: ) (where the old os is installed)... but I can't get to the data on the old D: partition (now called J: )... when I try to access it I get an "Access is denied" error. Diskmanager says it's a healthy drive. Disk manager also reports the correct size of the partition, but when viewing it in "my computer" it doesn't list the total size or free space at all. It's set up as a logicaldrive extended partition... not sure if that's causing problems or not.

Any ideas on what might be wrong?

Thanks!

OK, I am really confused, but you know (at least last I heard) that when you have multiple drives and partitions, this is the driver letter order by default: #1 drive primary=C,#2 drive primary=D, the additional #1 drive partitions=E,F,.... and then last the additional paritions G....

Well... I have 2 cd roms and an sm/cf card reader that had some of the other drive letters....

Just for kicks I reassigned the drives so that I have the new master HD partitions still as C and D and the old drive partitions are now E and F.

Same result. :(
