I installed a new Western Digital HD. I set it as the master, and put my old Maxtor HD as slave. I then installed Win XP on my new drive. Everything worked great. I transferred all my files that I wanted off the old drive.

Now the problem is when I physically removed the old hd from my system, the computer doesn't recognize that I have ANY hd installed. I have tried both connectors on the cable, verified my power cable, but still no good. If I put the old hd back in, the system boots up no problem.

How do I go about removing this old hd, and having the system recognize the new?

Weird,

You could try using the CS (cable select) option and see if that helps. You will need an 80 wire cable, which you should have anyway. Make sure that you have the Blue Connector at the Mobo, and the Black to the Primary Drive. Does the WD have a jumper for Slave Present ?? some of them did, it might screw up the WD. The old Maxtor might have forced the controller to ATA33 and when its disconnected, the WD now has problems.
