Ok so i thought i was ready for a windows reinstall if needed, before a hardware upgrade, but i was wrong.
i didnt back up my firefox or opera bookmarks, and would really like to get them back.

Initially i tried the repair method with the windows cd after a new mb-cpu-ram install. but that didnt work, so i just did a clean install. i did back up the old c drive with acronis, and have restored the image to another drive. i even put the old hardware back in, and tried booting after i restored the image of the old c drive, but that didnt work. it said error loading os...

any ideas?

I believe Acronis TrueImage will let you mount an image in order to get stuff out of it. Rummage around in the UI and/or the Help file for an option like that.

Do you have another HDD drive that you can restore the old image to and mount as a second drive and just browse too?

yep.
but it seems the only way at least for the firefox bookmarks, would be to somehow run firefox from the old HD and export the bookmarks to a file.

Have you had a look in here on the old HDD? C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ (thats an XP path) I have backups that I did not take but I use foxmarks so that might be causing them not sure just a thought

Thanks so much for the help, there was a bookmarks file, which was 1mb, and also a bookmarks backup folder in there.
Got them all back, thanks again for the help everyone!
