New Hardware but slow dvd ripping?

Hi there!

I just upgraded my pc to a gigabyte sinxp1394 with 2 sticks of corsair xms pc3500 and a 2.4 ghz running at
2.9 ghz and ddr375.
Other hardware is:

Radeon 8500LE
Plextor CDRW 24x
Pioneer DVD-A06S
WD 80GB 8MB
Seagate BarracudaIV 80 GB
Hercules GameTheater XP

I did a fresh install of windows xp and downloaded the latest flaskmpeg and divx codec and also dvdx 2.2
The problem i have is everytime i want to start converting a dvd using flaskmpeg i get thrown back to the
desktop and in dvdx - which is working correctly - i only get about 20 to 26 fps.
Isn´t that very low? What am i doing wrong?

Help please!

regards

Robert

Most DVDs have limited DVD-movie ripping speed. My Pioneer DVR-A05 is fixed at 2x. So is the new Sony burner. This is why I bought a separate DVD-ROM drive to back up movies 🙂

hmmm, maybe i should try to copy the vob files to my harddisk at first and
convert it from there....
I´ll try that....

thanks for the input VBboy!

No problem.
You can try using SmartRipper or DvdDecrypter which will be bound only by your drive's ripping speed. It shows you the speed; it will usually start at 2-3x and go up to 4-8x or more, depending on single/dual layer disk, etc. But yours may stay at 2x. Check it out.

what he said....dvdecrypter works well.

The a05 is locked at 2x, as are most other pioneers as far as I know. You can grab a cheap liteon 16x to do the ripping...

Yep, the LiteOn is excellent. Check out http://www.cdspeed2000.com - awesome site with DVD and other benchmarks. Most 16x drives work very well. I have an Artec, and it's almost as fast as the LiteOn.

ive also heard rumors that toshiba was locked at 2x as well...cant confirm this though.

the lite-on 16x can be had for 40.00 shipped from newegg. it is a bit noisy on the wideup though

I had a LiteOn before, but i wasn´t too impressed with its reading and error correcting capabilities.
That was why i bought the pioneer drive which is fantastic regarding error correction.
I have always used decss to copy a dvd to my harddrive (did that with the pc i had before)
is smartripper or dvddecrypter very different or better?

thanks for your help guys! i really appreciate it!

Robert

Have tried Smartripper and DVDdecrypter. I think that DVDdecrypter is by far the better one.
Flask and Xmpeg both work like a charm now.
But still: i´m running my p4 2.4@2.91 with ddr412 and the highest average framerate i get is around 21.
Shouldn´t it be faster? Am i doing something wrong or is 21 frames ok?

Robert
