New Hard Drive

Hi, I'm building a PC for the first time and need a SATA hard drive with 160 or 200 GB, an 8 mb buffer, at 7200 rpm. Which brand and model should I get? I've looked at Seagate, Western Digital, and Maxtor, with Seagate being the priciest and Maxtor the cheapest. Is paying extra for a Seagate worth it? Reliability is most important, and I need good speed for games. Thanks for any help 😉

in the 200GB area, Seagate 7200.9 series FTW.

But if you can swing the heavier price tag. the Western Digital WDK400 is showing to be a VERY promising drive.

What's the difference between the Seagate 7200.8 and 7200.9? Because a 200gb 7200.8 is available at zipzoomfly for $105. And I've heard that Western Digital is not as reliable as Seagate, so I'm not sure if I'd buy from them.

7200.8= SATA I

7200.9= SATA II + NCQ plus all around faster operation.

EDIT: As for Western Digital, I ahve a 160GB ATA Western Digital Caviar SE in one of my comps running 24/7 for 1.5 years. No problems so far at all.

Ripoff! You can get the seagate 200GB drives with those specs IIRC for $50 at frys (when they have a sale, which is quite often). I've gotten about 4 of these drives and it's quite nice really.

I have 8 Western Digital 200gb IDE drives kicking around that are still doing great after 2.5 years. The SATA version, the WD2000JD or WD2000JS, should be a good buy.

I'll stick behind the drive I rec'd Seagates are just not as good performance wise the 7200.8 performed about the same as the 7200.7 which wasn't that great, check out Storagereview.com for the details, unless your willing to wait for a special at a B&M store I'd go w/ the drive I suggested.

The Hitachi drive linked is one of the fastest SATA drives out (yes, it is slower than a raptor) but it is also very quiet to boot. I would seriously consider that drive until you can pony up the money for one of the 400GB WD 16mb SATA II drives ($198-212)

Also I think I've found the 160gb version of this drive (at least I think it's the same one) and it only $86 🙂

Go here and search around the site for game specific and many other comparisons. You will see that the Hitachi 7k250 consitently rates among the top drives with SCSI, Raptors, and sometimes a WD drive beating it for speed. Combine this with how quiet it is and you have a winner.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against WD or seagate as I currently own 4 drives from these two brands I just think right now the Hitachi drive is the best bang for the buck.
