new hard drive Q

Got a WD 320 gig drive... (newegg), set it into a venus enclosure, and started the format.

Running on USB 1 not 2.... seemed to be going good but slow.... left it running few hours... left - came home and the disk was making this noise:

ch-click ch-click whirllllll (almost like the sound of a siren)

the format seemed to be stuck at 87%.... so turned it off. Let it sit.... turn the drive on again and it is still doing the click click

I'm assuming the hard drive is defective, but figure I should run it by the experts (you guys) first.

Thanks

That sounds like it's having trouble reading a specific section of the drive. Head to Western Digital's website and get their diagnostics tools. Hopefully it'll give you an error number, which Western Digital will probably want if you're to get an RMA.

Or see if newegg will replace it.

Are these things ever fixable by the diagnostic program?

I see sending it back to newegg is going to cost me shipping $ - 🙁

Looked at the WD page and it's not clear if they refund my shippig cost.

What's better? Sending it to newegg or sending it to WD?

if its clicking then the head is stuck.... ive had 2 differnt WD drives do that but they were under EXTREME use and worked for about 2 years... id RMA it if i could...

I'll say the hdd is dead. Probably caused by overheating in the enclosure IMO. RMA at the soonest.

One of your problems is that you don't really know if the hard drive is bad or the USB chipset in the enclosure is bad.

I'd try:
- Download Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for DOS.
- Connect the drive to your motherboard.
- Run DLGDIAG.

If the problem is bad block(s), it will mark the blocks as bad to prevent re-use of the bad blocks. If there are a ton of bad blocks, the drive is shot. If the drive tests OK, the USB chipset in the enclosure is probably the culprit.

Hope this helps!

The drive...still in enclosure... eventually stops clicking

Trying to run WD tools but drive is not seen, maybe b/c format failed?

I go into My Comp-Manage-Disk Management and drive does not show

Drive does show in the bottom right toolbar as a usb storage device.. "Safely remove hardware"

i got a brand new oem Raptor from newegg that started clicking before i even had it formatted. i had to send it back to WD and i was out the shipping plus i got a refurb drive in return. It still had a 5 year warranty but it left me with a bad taste in my mouth.

a refurb? jeepers:disgust:

How do I know if I'm getting a refurb? The one they sent me doesn't have a box (or anything) to begin with... just bubble wrap

If you return a part to Newegg within the first 30 days, they'll replace it with a brand new item. Do that next time.
