some Older motherboards support up to 32GB of hard drive (IDE) capacity only. Now, I have a PIII mobo and I can use a 120GB (IDE) on it, do u think it can support newer capacities like 400GB and up?

(my mobo is an Intel 440BX)

already serached intel site did no find anything useful

any ideas?

I don't know for sure but I think that some larger HDs come with a some sort of preboot driver that allows you to utilize the full capacity of the drives on older MBs. I certainly wouldn't get a 400 gb HD without researching this, though.

I had a 440BX mobo that had to have the bios flashed to take a 40gb drive so i'm guessing that 400gb drives are beyond it. It probably supports only up to 137gb when the 48bit LBA limit comes in. However a way round this might be to get a cheap ide controller card for a pci slot and connect it to that if you want to keep the setup and put a bigger hard drive in it.

I would love to be proven wrong though.
