New hard drive...not system drive?

Well I just installed my new hard drive and I don't want to have my old on in my system before...however...after setting everything up, and removing the old hard drive from my system...the new hard drive isn't detected as the "system drive". It booted up fine...the only real significance of this is that when I right click "My Computer" and go to the system restore I get an error regarding run32.dll.

When I stick my old hard drive back in everything works fine...the old hard drive however is dubbed "the system drive" by windows, but I don't want have to keep the old hard drive for windows to function correctly.

There must be a way to make my new hard drive the "system drive".

Did you ghost the old drive's image onto the new one, or install Windows on the new drive? In either of those cases, the new drive should be treated as the main boot device (and, I guess, the "system drive").

You can't just copy the contents of your old HDD over to the new one in Windows and then boot off of it. Many things will break, even if it does let you boot like that (which is unlikely).

WD has a utility on their site that allow you to transfer the entire contents from one drive to another. When you are done you can even boot off the new drive. I don't know about other HD maufacturers though.

The new Seagate drive actually came with software to correctly copy all the contents of the old drive to the new drive...but I guess it skipped out on something because even though I can boot off of the new drive, it's not detected as the system drive. Everything seems fine though. I can boot off of the new drive with or without the old drive...just system restore isn't accessible without the old drive.

Do you have any recommendations on better ghosting software?
