hello all,
I recently hooked up a Seagate ST3200822A 200GB barracuda to my system and windows xp has trouble detecting it as a 200GB hard drive. When I check under Disk Management it says the drive is 128GB for some reason. I have this drive hooked up to a Promise ata-100 ide controller along with a Western Digital drive but it has no troubles seeing that one. Here's my specs:

asus p4p800 deluxe
intel p4 2.6ghz 800fsb
2x512 corsair xms pc3200
promise ata-100 ide controller

the following hd's and cd/dvd-roms are connected to the mobo's ide channels:
maxtor 60gb 7200 rpm
wd 27.3gb 7200 rpm
toshiba 16x dvd-rom
nec 8x dvd-rw 2510a

i've connected to the promise controller:
wd 120gb 7200 rpm
seagate 200gb 7200 rpm barracuda

using windows xp pro (w/ sp2 installed)
mobo bios is revision 1007 (newest on asus' site is 1017 so I haven't updated bios yet)

I'd like to save updating bios as a last option because other than this problem the system has been pretty much stable to my liking. Anyways, any suggestions are gladly welcome. Thanks for any input.

you need a new bios that supports 48-bit Logical Block Addressing because your current one does not

1. Is there any update for the Promise controller's firmware?
I always keep my motherboard bios updated; are you against updating the motherboard bios for some reason?
2. What about connecting the drive directly to the motherboard's IDE connector? Maybe format the drive while connected directly to the motherboard, then switch to the Promise controller afterwards...
3. Is there any advantage or need for the Promise controller at all? Copy the contents of the 27.3 Gb drive to the new 120 Gb drive, and then just "get by" with using only the 2 larger drives.

nope i left the jumpers as they were. the seagate as the master and wd 120gb connected as the slave, both connected to the promise controller.
