I have two new drives installed in the PC I just built, a Maxtor D740X 80G and a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 60G. I obviously can't tell which one is making the noise since they're both installed in the same PC and running simultaneously, but every once in a while I hear this fairly loud "thunk." Kinda tough to describe really. Sort of like the sound a hdd makes when the power is cut suddenly. I don't think the power is dropping out though, because I'm sure WinXP would have a fit if it detected that one of the drives had been "disconnected." My guess is that it's the second drive causing the problem.

Should I be worried?

Yes, any clicking or abnormal sound coming from a HD is a bad thing. Backup your important files now before it fails. THen do a scan disk and see if the manufactorer has a software for testing the HD. I know that Maxtor and WD has a software for testing their drives.
Good luck

The clicking sound coming from your harddrive means it is near its end of life cycle (regardless how long). i had a new IBM drive for 4 months before it stopped working, and it was making a clicking sound as well. i RMA the sucka but still pissed cuz i loss some important files.. yea i would backup everything if i were you.
