New hard drive is really slow

I just bought a new seagate 80 gig hard drive and I'm running it as my slave drive.

I can play half life 2 well without any stuttering on my master drive Maxtor 20 gig drive. But when I run the game on the second drive, there is a very noticeable stuttering. I am playing both games with the same settings.

I have my master drive attached to it's own black cable. My dvd-rom and slave drive is attached to the same cable (no more cables).

P4 2.66 MHZ
512 MB ram
BFG geforce 6800 oc 128 MB

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

having your cd rom and your seagate harddrive iattach to the same cable is casuing the hdd to slow down. it usally a bad idea to have a cd rom and hdd on the same cable, since the cd rom runs at like at33 or somewere along that line, it'll force the hdd drive to run at at33 also.

No it won't bus mastering prevents that. Just make sure your using an ata-100 cable and not an ata-33 one. The ata-100 wires will look skinnier than an ata-33 one. Check your dma settings and run hdtach. Tell us what kind of scores you get. Should be able to tell if it's running full speed.
