My first inclination is simply to unplug my old 80gb, plug in the new 250gb, install windows on the new drive and get it runnin. Then plug in my old drive, transfer what i need, then format it....

Is this the best way?

is your old drive/os/progs stable ?..are you planning on swapping any installed parts around/out ?..I used a 30GB drive to setup my an35n ultra w/ XPPro(48lba patch followed by sp1) back in 11 2k3 then used Maxtor's utility CD to migrate up to a 160 ..was no problem.. gl 🙂

Im replacing my old drive because of an intermittant clicking/shutting off sound it makes.....

Almost sounds like its powering down for a second or two.

Your way should work just fine though.

I pulled the 30GB and placed it in the 160's box ..for emergencies..😉 😀

on a side note.. WD has a fairly nice RMA procedure in place even tho it took almost 2 months turnaround..sent a 60BA got back a 60BB ..🙂

other than mechanically old and on its way out is the basic software install ok..? if so I'd back up valuables onto media of your choice then do/attempt a migrate..if nogo or old clicky fails..you can always do fresh on the new drive.. 🙂

is it a WD..?

Yea, the drive has been working fine. The clicking just scares me 🙂

I reformatted and reinstalled the OS no less than 3 weeks ago when i rebuilt up to an athlon 64. So shes runnin just fine.

And yes, it is a WD.

Wouldnt the increased cache help though? 2mb to 8mb?

Cool, didnt know about that online test, thanks 🙂

Drive passed, but ironically clicked/shut off while running the test 😀

About the drive, when i bought the drive it listed a 3 year warranty and even on my invoice it shows to contact WD for support. It seems they lied to me. Should i call and complain tomm and see what they can do?

Yes, call Newegg up and have them give you a replacement.

Crap, i fergot. Im using XP Pro on the 80gb right now, will i have trouble using it as a slave if i switch?

AS long as you have it as a slave and the 250 as master it wont be a problem to have an old os on there.

If you are going to get rid of the drive I would also suggets Partitioning the 250 for the OS, like 15-20gig partition. That way when you have to reload the OS again you dont have to try and backup data or reformat.

Good idea.... thanks 🙂

I have a older Quantum Fireball that is starting to get that clicking noise. When it does it quits. Usually only on boot. If I switch the
power connector then that will stop the clicking. Is that a sign of the drive beginning to fail?
