I recently got a WD 1.5TB drive and it has been great so far. However recently there is a problem with videos where if I play them for extended periods (usually every 10-15 minutes) the video will just lockup for around 6-7 seconds and then it will fast forward and play catch up. I never had any issue with playback previously. I was getting them consistently every 10 minutes. About 30 minutes in I decided to copy the movie to another drive and replay there. No problems for the rest of the movie. I also have no playback problems on other hard drives.
I checked the temperature via SmartFan and SMART. The SMART value it returns for Temperature is 122. However SmartFan reads it as 30C (as well as hddstatus.com). 122F = 50C, I am not sure how they get 30C. Regardless, I moved the hard drive to the top bay (away from my other two hard drives and directly in front of a fan) and it hasn't dropped in temp at all.
Last night I tried watching a movie from the new 1.5TB drive on my Vista installation and it started skipping within 5 minutes. I installed Windows 7 on the 1.5TB drive and played the rest of it from 7 and didn't see a skip from the rest of the movie. I've ran the WD diagnostics but it passed the tests. (I don't put much faith in these HD diagnostic programs. Last two Seagate drives were 'fine' according to the tests even though they kept dropping out of detection, or would have an audible clicking sound)
Anyways I need a solution or help soon because this is my 3rd 1.5TB drive from a different company and it's really grinding my gears.
