New Hampshire people? Are you here? Need advice.

I am seriously considering a move to New Hampshire. I've never been there.

I need to know the following:

How expensive is it to live there? I'm talking living on lower middle class income - maybe 35-40k.

Basically, I want to know if I can find a small 2 bedroom apt for less than 500$ a month like I do now. Even a trailer or whatever is lowcost but a decent roof over the head kind thing.

Tell me anything else you can such as: cost of running a car (tags, etc), average utilities, etc.

I've never changed states either, how hard is it to get a driver's license changed? I have a commercial license now.
Thanks.

It varies greatly by area. A 2br apt for under $500 will probably be tough to come by, but you'd do fine with 35-40k/yr.

I pay ~$120/yr registration for my truck ('98 Tacoma). It will cost $50 for your initial DL..

I'm more familiar with the northern area - Insane3D is down south. Whereabouts are you looking?

Edit: To change DL, bring your old license & birth certificate. You may need a utility bill/etc to prove residency, or you can have a clerk at your town office fill out an affidavit that you have notorized -- it just says that you live at xyz address, and is accepted in leiu of a utility bill.

What is Insane3D?

As far as the area: it could be among the following

Lincoln or Franklin - possibly Lancaster

I live in Hudson, used to live in Manchester. Auto registration is a pain, have to go to the city first, then go to the state, and they each get 60 bucks out of you per year, plus the cost of the tag.

My one bedroom apartment in Manchester was $815 a month with hot water and heat, and that was the low end of places that had listings online or in the newspapers though it was a pretty big apartment. In Hudson I pay $675 for the same, slightly smaller apartment. I found a few places that were cheaper, but they tended to be much smaller. One place was a studio for the same 675. Anyplace that's reasonable size and very well priced gets snatched up quickly.

Electric bill can run around 60 bucks a month if you don't use the a/c much. This month I think I'm going to be around 200 because I started using it a lot.

Car insurance isn't bad. When I moved from MA to NH and switched to Geico, I could get better insurance for less than half the cost, because MA is so awful. Gas is about 3.20 for premium right now.

Check craigslist, that's how I found this place and several others that I looked at.

The Lancaster/Whitefield/Littleton area will be significantly less expensive than Manchester.

As far as vehicle registration, I paid all my fees locally...IIRC, I registered both at the town office - didn't have to go to the DMV.

I think maybe some cities can do both. It's been awhile. I know I had to make a 30 minute drive to the DMV just to drop off an address change notification.

Ah..yeah, I went to the DMV for that as well -- fortunately, it's only ~15min from here.

Edit: OP: There is no cell coverage in Lancaster, if that matters. They're supposed to be putting a tower up this summer, but I heard it was delayed.

Changing drivers license will be no problem.

Providing clues to the area that you are looking into will be a help.

The Southern third/half of NH will be more expensive (Mass influence).
The Northern section will be cheaper and much more rual.

It is not considered to be a welfare state, therefore the government services will be less. Taxes are much less.
