New GWB lies---and Robert Gates.

By Nov 8, scant hours after the election results were in, GWB announced the resignation of Rumsfeld and the selection of another old Bush family retainer--Gates as Rummy's replacement.

In administration known for its revisionist history--this stunning resignation acceptance sets perhaps a new world record as the fastest flip flop on record---because less than a week ago GWB was proudly stating Rummy and Cheney were a lock until 08.--especially when GWB openly acknowledges that at the same time he was making the Rummy stays statement, GWB was already talking to Gates. And now GWB says he was planning to replace Rummy, regardless of the election outcome.---which I just found on the Yahoo news.

So my first comment is how can GWB recoup his fortunes when he has and continues to tell bald faced lies to the American public.---How stupid does he think we are?---but the bald faced liar label has to stick to GWB.

In terms of Gates---he was CIA director during Iran Contra---although no charges ever stuck to Gates---one still has to ask the question---how could he be CIA director and not know Iran Contra was going on full speed ahead---and that a cast of shadowy characters
were openly violating US laws---and openly dealing with and transferring weapons to an avowed enemy of the United States?---either that or Gates was just deaf, blind, and indescribably incompetent---its your call---corrupt OR incompetent during Iran contra

What kind of message does that Gates nomination send to the United States and to the world?---namely that the guy is corrupt---but just like Rumsfeld---he is our kind of a corrupting figure. With the senate now almost certainly democratic---I hope one of the Senates first official acts will be to use their advice and consent constitution power to send Gates packing. Because the last thing we need now is some morally bankrupt Rumsfeld clone..

Gates was also involved in writing the NIE in 2002 that got the admin the votes needed to authorize use of force, if necessary.

A real change of pace going on there! NOT!

If the Repubs didnt face such a beat down, Rummy probably would still be there.

Gates is also someone who has called for dialouge with Iran. Hes also one of the writers of the Baker Iraq Commission, which is said not to be very favorable to the current administration.

My bet is Gates wasnt the first choice, but the first to accept the offer in which he did so very reluctantly. Gates has absolutely nothing to gain from becoming Sec of Defense. Hes taking a massive paycut. Hes going to have to clean up a huge mess. Etc, etc. Gates has served five different presidents. He was called upon numerous times under Clinton.

The dems would be shooting themselves in the foot if they start off with vitirol. There arent to many people that are going to be willing to take over that mess.

Also you are slightly off his involvement in Iran-Contra.

Gates was a Deputy Director of Intelligence. Meaning he was the Deputy to the Director of the Directorate of Intelligence.

Iran-Contra took place under the Directorate of Operations side. Its likely he could have known, but it was never proven. It's definate he was not actively involved in it.

Waiting for TrollJohn with his 20 post per day ratio to jump on this one! For some reason, I enjoy seeing him cry about every single thing. Cry babies are fun.

You will have to wait a week to continue to bait him.

This personal attack went well over the line.

I for one think Wreckem may have some points---and an alternate explanation may be that the party elders in the GOP have given GWB the new dutch uncle marching orders as they are forced to assert control after a failure of this magnitude. Namely a coming GOP purge of the neo-cons---the GOP may be stuck with GWB for two more years--but GWB's cronies are all fair game.

Somewhat a testable hypothesis---will Rummy be the last?---or just the first in a long line forming up as we post?

Nice to see that his replacement ran the CIA.

Guess that means your liberals will still have something to bitch about.

I predict a very fast conformation when congress holds its lame duck session.
No way the GOP leaves this to next years congress. Otherwise Democrats will turn it into some platform to talk about torture.
See 9 hours before this thread was started I mentioned that the libs would have something to bitch about.

And you guys claim my predictions are never right :)

I think he will be the first and only MAJOR person to step down.
Rummy was the one taking all the heat. Most of the others are under the radar.
Maybe Condi goes, but I highly doubt that. She is way to popular among the base, Rumsfeld is not.

My favorite statement about Rumsfeld from Nixon "He's a ruthless little bastard. You can be sure of that."

A troll would be someone that does not add anything to the current discussion, kinda like you. I guess if you want to be technical, I am trolling against you right now. Funny thing though, I usually see you fools crying about all of his posts and trying to bully him (and every other conservative) out of here. Nice try though, next!

Operations is Fed from the Intel side.. it usually starts in Intel... But, I agree from another angle... I think it was an CIA Ops / Whitehouse operation with Ollie and boys..

I think Gates is clean regarding Iran Contra... as DDI he'd be in the loop if one existed.. but doubt it did..
I actually think he's ok for the job... a job that I'd not take for any amount of money or prestige... no way.. I don't see any way to move Iraqi thing up... it is all down hill from here .... egg on the face and all that... no way can he get an 'atta boy' doing what has to be done.. IMO

Yes Intel feeds Ops intel. However Iran Contra wasnt about Intel it was about Ops. Operations was solely culpable for Iran Contra when it comes to CIA involvement. Really it was the DoD, but they couldnt pull it off without the Operations side of the CIA helping them.

Give the guy a chance instead of pre-judging him. Isn't that what you want half of the country to do with the Dems? You want them to have a fair shot at proving that they can do things better, right? you want Americans to see that they truly are the solution we so badly needed, right?

I also have some reservations with Gates, but I'm willing to give him a chance.

It looks like again, Daddy has had to go to his personnel well of loyal friends to clean up Junior's mess - again.
Doesn't he have a life-long history of having to change the kid's diaper?

Change in Direction

He has a history of being willing to work with others, which Dubya's collection of sycophants did not have.
He can't be worse than Rummy - hell, even Henry Kissinger couldn't have been worst, and we all know how bad he was.

'Cut and Run' has just been elevated to 'Chop, Hack, Mutilate and Sprint.'

Remember when the right wanted to go after Clinton for destruction of public property because someone erased all the "W's" off of the keyboards in the White House. That was funny then and is even funnier now, after what has transpired the last 6 years.

What I remember about this 'Sabotage and Theft from the Whitehouse and Air Force One'
allegation was that when everything was examined
the conclusion was that there was nothing that had been removed from either the Whitehouse proper, or from Air Force One that was not the personal property of the Clintons,
and the 'damaged computers' had a few random keys missing in several offices that while some had missing 'W's', others had missing character keys as well that were not 'W's'.
some were found in surplus equipment store rooms, and that much of the extra equipment was was bits and pieces of
computers, telephones, fax machines and the like that were broken equipment from the Reagan and Bush I Administrations,
as well as other equipment that had broken during the 8 years that Clinton had been in office.
We're talking about mucho stuffo, from the many offices that are used by the staff and aides in the Whitehouse complex.

The 'Conservative Talk Shows' appear to have been the driving force behind these allegations,
but an investigation into vandalism and staff improprieties cleared the Clintons and their staff of having done anything at all.

Conservative Agenda, character assassination at it's best - none of the false prophets and serial liars ever corrected the record.
Throw mud, sling bullshit, move on to the next allegation without acknowledging facts or truth.

So there, nyah nyah.
