new guy wants some overclocken fun

I would like to buy a cheap motherboard cpu combo to have some overclocken fun and challenge! I guess I could do some research on some of the threads but I will do that latter. However, I would like to hear from some of you guys on the direction I should take. I don't have piles of cash to unload on this project. So where is the best bang for the buck so to speak?
Any help what so ever would be greatly appreciated.
