New GTX460 slower than old 8800GT

I just got an eVGA GTX460 1GB card tonight to replace my 8800GT. Running Bad Company 2, my FPS actually went down with the GTX460, not up. I did not change anything except install the latest drivers, as the old drivers I was running weren't recognizing the card. At 1400x900, i was averaging 55 fps in BC2 with the 8800. That is down to about 40-45 fps now with the gts460, at the same resolution and quality settings. I didn't touch anything in game at all.

I am PISSED!!!! On top of this, the card I got today is the 2nd gtx460 i have gotten. the first arrived DOA 2 weeks ago. Fortunately, newegg was no problem to get a replacement.

why did I spent $230 on a SLOWER card!?!?!?!?!?

i'm running win7 64 pro, with a Q6600 quad running at 3.0GHz with 8Gb ram, on an eVGA 132-CK-NF78 780i motherboard.

I was expecting, based on reviews here on TH, to get at least 50% more fps, if not double. I see i am not the only one sorely disappointed.

any thoughts??? Thanks.

For BC2 you'd be better off with an HD5850.

After not having uninstalled your previous drivers before plugging in the 460 and then seeing that it was not recognized when you did plug it in...

Did you then just download and install the new drivers over top of the old ones ?

Try to uninstall all nvidia drivers, physx software, that 3dvision driver crap, reboot your computer, reinstall new drivers, reboot again.

45 fps @1400x900 with gtx 460? Somethings is definitly wrong.
It should be around 60/70 fps at that res..

it's even worse than that. It lags out to 5 fps at times while playing. the 8800gt never did that.

i ran nvidia system monitor, to see cpu and gpu usage. the 4 cpu cores were running average of 75-85% while the gpu was only running 40-45%. the clock speeds on the gpu went up to normal once i launched BC2, from very slow at idle on the desktop.

His point is that DirectX11 is more hardware intensive, idiot.

Anyway, like someone else said do a clean install of the drivers, uninstall all graphic drivers with driver sweeper and reinstall the latest.

Please be more considerate when participating in our technical forums. Personal insults are not tolerated in these forums.

try forcing DX10 just to see what happens. when I used a gtx470 it was slower and had massive fps drops compared to my gtx260. when I forced DX10 it ran normally though.

I'm sorry that I didn't know that. that makes me ignorant, not an idiot. learn the difference. Posting a statement without anything else to someone who is asking questions is just pointless.

I'm sorry you bought a DirectX 11 card without knowing 11 was more intensive than 10.

There are also a lot of tweak applications and guides for BFBC2. I used to manually set my 8800GT to DX9 so that I could run it 1920x1200 at medium settings.

When I got my GTX 470, running it in DX11 at high settings only got me fps in the 30s. Making some tweaks, I'm back to high frames rates.

I found that running DX10 in BFBC2 made it very difficult to see thru blowing sand and snow. DX9 was better and DX11 was best.

Are you sure your NV control panel is not forcing high quality AA settings?

Also a lot of games 're-detect' optimal graphics settings in their Options menu. For example, when I ran Crysis with my 8800GTS 320mb, the game automatically selected a resolution of 1280x1024 with Medium settings for almost every graphical detail. However, once I got a 4890 1GB, it upgraded the *optimal* settings to 1920x1080 with High and Very High for the same detail settings. The new settings were applied automatically upon me booting into the game.

As others have suggested, you may also be comparing performance in DX10 vs. DX11. There is hardly any difference in visuals in BF:BC2. So if you want higher performance, choose the DX10 path and see if that changes anything.

I gotta say given all the nvidia fanboyism about this card lately this thread is providing a good deal of amusement.

More importantly the OP should actually run a registry cleanup to make sure the key are clean for the program. If windows is trying to load old keys and such it will drag down the performance of anything on the system pretty substantially.

I never had a single issue in DX10. I did force DX9 on for a bit but there were flickering textures in a few odd spots and some things were just not textured right at all when I got close to them.

I noticed the opposite in stalker COP. DX10 ran like complete shit, and DX11 ran beautifully(everything maxed).

well this isn't a DX10 or DX11 issue in general. I was just saying that a few people are having issues with gtx400 series cards in BC 2 under DX11. there is a thread about it over on Hardforum. for some reason gpu usage drops way down in BC 2 under DX11 but works fine in DX10.

Don't post if you cant do it without reverting to name calling in the first sentence.

Because its super obvious to everyone at all times that this is the case? He bought one of the best price/performance DX11 cards on the market and it was overall a very significant upgrade from the 8800 series cards. I can understand why he is frustrated, but at best its a driver/gamecode problem and certainly no lacking on his hardware side.

He had an attitude saying "what's your point?" to someone who was giving helpful info. That came off as snotty and arrogant, hence my insult, but anyway, moving on...

460 has some issues being fully utilized in BC2 multiplayer... there's a big thread about it over at the eauk forums.

Like the brothers above me said. Reboot into safe mode, uninstall nvidia everything from cpanel,, then run driver sweeper and put check on nvidia and clean. then reboot, into normal mode and now install the latest WHQL drivers,, and see how your performance is,, also are your settings the same in the Nvpanel,,, make sure your not using any AA , AF 16x is free, put it to high quality,,, single gpu, try it,, gl

well, thanks to those with actually helpful advice. I deleted the settings.ini file, and let the game recreate one from scratch. Now i am running at 1900x1200 with 4x AA and 4xAF, at high settings, and getting 60 fps +/- average. I didn't need to clean out my registry, which I usually keep fairly clean anyway. It was all down to the settings.ini file, which was forcing it to use dx9. now its running in dx11. so all is well.
