I had a similar thing happen with a BFG GeForce 6800 OC a few years ago. I just lived with it because I didn't want to bother with an RMA, but if it's important to you I'm sure you could exchange it for one that is stable at stock speeds.

Not sure if this is true but is it possible that, if the card isn't able to overclock by even 50 MHz over the official speed, that there may be more things wrong with the vid card?

my guess is they figured it was "close enough" to stable so shipped it
seems like it works at most things. But i get weird cuda errors without the underclock.
Also another i noticed was in 2D it was occasionally "blinking" but this seems to have gone away after the first few hours with the card.

BTW load temps are 75C right now with the underclock.

I'd send it back...underclocking it by 50MHz means you're at the stock speeds of a regular 260 and I assume you paid more than what the regular version cost so I would definitely send it back.

seems i'm more unlucky than i'd thought, it's hardlocking the system now.
COMPLETELY faulty hardware
i'll RMA it first thing tomarrow, and i might not even consider replacing it with the same card

I recently picked up the vanilla (non-SC) version of this card and have run 3DMark Vantage without problems and I'm working my way through a stack of games I had been collecting, waiting for this upgrade. It's been great with no glitches or nvidia crashes even during multi-hour play sessions. I was afraid it might overheat, because it's a tight fit in my SFF case, but I haven't had any problems at all.

My card is still at stock since I don't have any game that I can't run at 1650x1080 with AA/AF cranked. I'm very happy with this card, especially since I skipped a few generations of upgrades.

It definitely sounds like you got a bad pick. I've had good luck with mine and would definitely recommend a straight replacement (or just exchange for a vanilla). You could also wait a bit for the GTX 275 if you can get a refund.

i just returned it to FRY'S will take 23 days for the money to refund to my card
then i'll take another look at what the graphics industry has to offer me.

it was "board revisions V0.0" the first evga 216 to come out.
already two newer models on newegg ...
not worth swapping if I was gonna get the same junk, also costs 60 bucks more than newegg now

23days? what? That's ridiculous...I'd just shop online.

Fry's usually processes a chargeback on the spot, especially with defective merchandise. It may take a few days to clear, but generally it will offset the original charge before you even get your monthly bill.
