Hi,

I have put together this spec for a workstation for Graphics and Video editing, after following advice on this and other forums.

I shall be using Adobe CS5.

I am buying components online from Ireland.

This is not my first PC build, but I am by no means an expert and have a few questions, so any comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your time!

Proposed build:

Motherboard:
Asus P6X58D-E

Processor:

Intel Core i7-950 Bloomfield 45nm 3.06GHz LGA1366 L3 8MB 130W Retail
(MoBo and CPU bundle)

RAM:
Corsair Memory XMS3 12GB (3 x 4GB) DDR3 1600MHz DIMM 240-Pin - Mfr#: CMX4GX3M1A1600C
(leaves 3 slots for expansion up to 24GB max)

Power Supply:
Corsair Memory 850W Ultra Quiet 80+ ATX PSU

Boot Drive:
Samsung 1TB Spinpoint F3 7200rpm SATA 3Gb/s 32MB

Video Storage:
Samsung 1TB Spinpoint F3 7200rpm SATA 3Gb/s 32MB
(will possibly add another and RAID 0 them at some point)

General Storage:
Samsung 1TB Spinpoint F3 7200rpm SATA 3Gb/s 32MB

Optical Drive:
LiteOn 12x BD-RW Blu-Ray re-writer SATA

OS:
Windows 7 Ultimate or Professional 64-bit OEM
(any advantage to ultimate?)

GPU:
Zotac GeForce GTX 470 1280MB PCI-Express 2.0 x16 HDMI AMP! - Mfr#: ZT-40202-10P
(This is the overclocked version with extra coolers - I think!)

Monitor:
Samsung SyncMaster F2380M

Any ideas on a case to put it all in?
Should I get an extra cooler for the CPU?
Am I missing anything?

Im not going to give you links as i dont know where you will be getting your thinges. However, I think this build is fiarly stupid (no offence) with SB out. My recommendation is:

Motherboard : GIGABYTE GA-P67A-UD3

CPU : i7-2600k

RAM : G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL9Q-16GBXL

PSU : XFX P1-650X-CAG9 650W

SSD : (Boot drive) OCZ Vertex 2 OCZSSD2-2VTXE120G

HDD : (Data Drive) Samsung Spinpoint F3

DVD/BluRay is fine

Windows 7 professional is usually fine

GPU : Galaxy 57NKH3HS00GZ GeForce GTX 570

Monitor is fine.

This build would perform a lot better then the original.

Hey mnewsham,
No offence taken - but what do you mean by "with SB out"? I don't understand the term.
Thanks for the input!

SB or Sandy Bridge is the newest intel CPU architecture design based on a 32nm Fabrication process. Try giving this a read through if you can. ;)

now GavB, can you give us a link to where you will be buying stuff? and your budget?

It's hard to make recommendations without seeing what they're actually charging for different items

@mnewsham
Oh yeah the optical drive ;-)
-and windows 7!

I'd rather spend more now and get a good system and not be sitting here in a few months say 'if only...'

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series (or any G-SKILL) seems like it will be hard to get around here:-(

@tynopik

I'm in Ireland so will mainly be using:

http://www.dabs.ie
and
http://www.komplett.ie

Thanks guys!

Holy crap...you're getting hosed on prices.
At the dabs.ie site, the i5-2500K is 214.14 euros...
214.14 Euros = 290.887776 U.S. dollars

Here in the US of A, that processor can range from $179. to about $240

I guess that's the price you pay for being Irish...:p

Mnewsham's build is good (as always). You can potentially swap the GTX 570 for a GTX 460 if you're not going to be doing much gaming. It won't make too much difference in CS5 and the price difference is substantial.

If you can't get G.Skill, then four of these 1.5V 4GB Corsair DIMMs will do the trick.

And also as a reminder the GTX 560 comes out in a week or two so you might wait for that as price drops on the 460 are likely. ;)

and thanks mfenn I sometimes forget you cant find some brands in Europe. ;)

Looks like a very good build, the gtx 560 (replacement of the 460) comes out on the 25th so you might consider that.

Wow, we have something you guys don't get?!

You probably wouldn't like the price though...

Yeah, Gainward tends to be a bit more pricey than the others anyway...at least for their top-tier products...but wow...
