Hey guys, i am currently in the process of purchasing a new video card but cant decide on what is best. I am looking for all over performance, noise, etc...my 3 choices are:
GTX280 or 260
sapphire 4870 1GB

My system specs are:
Q6600
4gb OCZ
Asus p5q deluxe
Enermax liberty 620W
19in. widescreen (will upgrade to 22' soon)

GTX 280 is overpriced IMO. GTX 260 Core 216 and 4870 1GB are the sweet spot. They are pretty much equal in price and performance.

Not sure about aoverall perfromance but i will agree they are the sweet spot when it comes to the price to performance ratio.

Would the gtx280 be considered a more future proof card? I can pick it up for around the same price now that its the holidays.

There is no future proof card. Does the 280 perform better? Yes. 10-20% IIRC. To me that's not worth the $100-150 price premium.

BTW: Where are you finding the 280 for the same price as the 260?

EDIT: Oh yeah. The 55nm GTX 260 Core 216 is now available on evga.com and newegg.com.

A friend of mine is selling it for $280. Used for less than a month (he got the 4870 X2). Black edition is also very tempting.

Yeahhhhhh...that 280 is definitely out. I guess he forgot the mention the overheating problem. Talk about getting my hopes up =/
