XDA Link

This is the Google News and Weather widget, can show just Weather alone, News alone (or as two separate widgets), or together in one widget.
Opens a pretty slick all inclusive interface that the main page shows weather.com weather and forecast, and page swipes (or scroll the headers at top) take you across the main Google News sections such as Top News through Entertainment.

Very nice, and matches the style that came with 2.0.1's Power Control and YouTube widget style updates.

More info at that XDA link. Simple install process. :)

Sprint and HTC need to step up on getting an OS upgrade out. Just another piece of software we can't use.

I'm going to get a new phone today and what you just posted is why I will probably end up with the Pre (or long shot: Tour) instead of an android phone.

Has anyone tried this on anything other than the Droid?

It is only a widget, and it's actually meant to come out with the OS v2.1, but someone ripped it out of the rom.
It works flawlessly on 2.0.1 on the Moto Droid, and that xda thread is on the HTC Dream subforum.

I imagine this widget works just fine on all versions.

as for having to wait for an update, rarely do you have to actually wait unless you want the official easy path.

I have a feeling Android OS development is going to slow down a little soon.
HTC has a v2.1 rom cooking up for the Hero, I imagine they are waiting for Google's official 2.1 release.
And that's always going to be the issue - the more "minor" updates, like 2.0.1, are going to be skipped on those phones that aren't "Google Experience", because if the manufacturer included a custom UI, then the manufacturer has to code that UI into the new OS version, versus simply checking that the new version works on the specific hardware and letting customers download it.

I'm going to root my Droid but I'm waiting for the community to get everything revolving Droid hacking just a little more polished and routine. More importantly, waiting for stable ROMs to get cooked up, otherwise I'm just sitting there with a rooted Droid that I can change some settings, but... I don't want to go digging around my Droid for hours just changing small little things. A full ROM would be awesome.

I like the idea, but will not be trying it until they host it on the Marketplace.

it won't be in the Android Market. It'll be like the refreshed widgets with 2.0.1, exclusive to that release only. This will be bundled with 2.1, and that will likely be the only way you can get it. Short of downloading it unofficially.

It's nice, but I'll stick with the Sense for now. If it would even work on an Eris.

It's a widget not a whole interface. All widgets should be able to work fine in the Sense UI, at least from my understanding. Whether or works on the Eris or not is something I want to know - nobody has chimed in if it works on any phones other than the Droid.

Any way to get the file without registering for the site?

If you're a power user, you really need to register at XDA. It's the cutting edge of any HTC product, especially the WinMo ones (or in this case the Android ones).

It should work on all Android phones. It works on my Android 1.6 G1 phone. If it doesn't work, just uninstall it.

Read the XDA thread, a number of other phones were running it.

I meant I'll continue to use the Time/Weather/Date widget that is part of the Sense UI. :)

ah

I wanted the Sense UI so bad, but not enough to abandon the hardware of the Moto Droid.

Hopefully soon the ROM cookers will get Sense UI onto the Droid. :)

*Exactly* what I am waiting for, the miledroid v.5 over at alldroidis looking pretty tempting but not quite there yet.

I have both, the Pre is overated. I used a Pre for several months and recently picked up a Hero, I don't see the Pre coming out of the drawer anytime soon.
