I've "bumped " this - Cannot anybody help, please?
I recently bought a Gigabyte 7DXR+ motherboard; Athlon 1800XP and Thermalright AX-7 and 256mb stick of Crucial 2100 ECC Registered DDR Ram. And a new Seagate Barracuda lV 40 gig hard drive. I built these into my Coolermaster case together with the existing Enermax 350 PSU and generic CDROM and CR Rewrite drives and Turtlebeach Santa Cruz soundcard.
I am using the F2 bios which came with the motherboard CD, and I have loaded the AMD chipset drivers and Via drivers from the same disc..
I have NOT loaded Via 4 in 1s, or done any bios updates .
I loaded the bios defaults and disabled the onboard sound and Raid
The video card is from my previous system ? A OEM Leadtek nVidia Ge Force 2 GTS 2. Using 23.12 drivers.
A fresh install of Windows 98SE was done and all worked first time - great .
One flight sim ?IL-2 sturmovik ? is loaded, as is a Cougar HOTAS- Game Commander 2 and Naturalpoint TrackIR.
That?s it.
There is no internet ( yet ), no other cards, no Word or Office programs
All was running well until today and then into the flight sim for 30 mins it froze.
The next is what happened and it seems to me that matters deteriorated. See what you think.
I pressed the Reset Button. It would not reboot. It stuck at the ?DEL to Setup screen?
( when all was well- the computer raced through this screen on booting )
I used the on /off switch and this time it seemed to reboot so I went into bios and checked the cpu temps etc. It was 44 degrees and the case was 22.
Wondering if it was overheating I changed the cpu warning from disabled to 60 degrees option.
I saved, booted up Ok and went to the flight sim. As it was loading I got a black screen and a BEEP!. On for one second; off for two. Then repeated, until I switched off.
I switched back on and scandisk ran but ?stuck ? at 85%? It would not reset, so I switched off.
I switched on and this time I loaded to desktop.
Reset into bios and set cpu warning to 70 degrees.
Scandisk ran OK this time.
I loaded the flight sim and got to where to start the 3d ( the graphics themselves) when the system decided to re- boot!.
Into safe mode.
I reloaded the 23.12 drivers.
I re boot Ok and try the flight sim again; this time it sticks on a loading screen.
Pressing re set, the computer starts OK.
I have disabled the cpu temp warning (default)
I ran Norton Utilities ( off the disc ) and Windoctor said no errors.
Running Disk Doctor I got the blank screen and the BEEPS again!
I press re set. As it is booting up I get the BEEPS again?
When I use ON/Off switch now I get no bootup ? just the BEEPS.
I have looked in Scott Mueller?s ?Upgrading and Repairing PCs? book and according to a Beep errors for Award Bios ( Award bios is what Gigabyte board uses) it says this ? bearing in mind it must be 2 or 3 years old now.
?Currently there is only one beep code in the Award bios. A single long beep followed by two short beeps indicates that a video error has occurred and the bios cannot initialise the video screen to display any additional information. ?
I am hopeful that what is wrong here is that my video card started to falter and has finally failed. It seemed to be a gradually deteriorating situation.
I have a TNT 1 card on this second computer ( used to compose this and send to internet) I will await for some replies before I take this card out to try ( knowing the way things are going, if I do that now, the second computer won?t work when I put it back !!J )
I sure hope it isn?t anything wrong with my new components especially the motherboard!
I had intermittent failing- to- boot and freezing flight sim problems before the change of mobo etc ( which I thought was cpu and cooling causes );
and only the CD drives, floppy, and video card and PSU remain of that system!!
Does anyone know what has happened here please?
Addendum - Since above,
I switched on and it started to boot, ie monitor switched on and I got a picture ( hurrah !!)-then it locked. I switched off. tried to boot - it wouldn't .
I re located the video card. No change. No boot.
Then I re-located the memory stick. Switched on and it re booted immediately - no bleeps Great!!. It offered to boot me in safe mode.
I booted in safe mode.
Then I pressed Start then restart option and then it wouldn't boot, locked up with bleeps!!
Sunsequent re-locate of memory stick - no boot.
QED- Video card is OK - Agree?
Jury out on memory stick. ??
PSU is definitely looking iffy- ??
Further - After leaving overnight, I switched on a nd straight away it started to boot ( no beeps ). I was too late to go into bios via "Del", but as i was going into desktop I got the BSOD. Two presses of space bar got the resumtion of the desktop loading. When loaded I thought I would go into the bios, so i went to shutdown sequence and pressed "restart". Immediately, the monitor went blank as if switched off and the bleeps started - till I switched off!!
