New GFX card

im looking to buy a new graphics card my budget is under $170 im looking at an Nvidia one i was not pleased with the ATI can anyone offer any suguestions? (system in sig)

It's easy to see why you're not pleased with your ATI... you have a crippled 9600 SE. For around $170 you might be able to get a vanilla 9800, if it must be new. Used, I think you can get a 9700 Pro for a bit less than that. Don't bother with the nVidia FX 5xxx series, which is about all that's in your price range. If you can save up a little more though, a 6600 GT would be better than both mentioned before.

If you have $170 you're probably not gonna be able to get anything good from this generation
So get an ATI.

If you need a new card today and can't wait, get a 9800 Pro. Not a 9800 EZ or any other version.

They can be found for around $180.00 new, or less in the FS/FT forums.

THIS is what you need, $139, and 5% slower than a 9800pro. *9700pro are GREAT*

Edit: A benchmark showing 9700pro @ 121 fps, while 9600SE @ 33fps heh

Well under $200 Nvidia gets owned by ATI. The 9700 Pro and 9800 Pro has no compition at $140 and $180. The FX5900XT is the best Nvidia has and it is crap in DX9.

And rightfully so. As you are now observing personally, it sucks harder than a turbocharged Hoover. You also shouldn't judge all ATI cards based on said crappy example - in your budget, you're looking at a 9800Pro - linked 9700Pro if you want to save some coin.

Sales wise, it's a close call since 9800Pro and 9600 cards allowed ATI to gain ground on the low end. 6800GT does dominate high end but soon ATI might catch up since they'll release 5 PCIe cards and Nvidia's are hard to find and are overpriced.

Performance wise, x800xt still kicks 6800ultra though.
Feature wise, Nvidia won.

So it's too hard to call a true winner.

For $170 I'd get 9700Pro
You could sell 9600se for $50 to someone and get 6600GT AGP for $220.

Of course one major feature of the new nVidia cards got paper launched. Until I see a functioning video processor on the 6-series, it is still too close to call on the current generation of cards. Especially now that ATi is getting aggressive and pulling out a vanilla X800 to directly complete against the 6600GT in the sub-$250 price range.
