New gaming rig - opinions please

Have built before, but that was many years ago. A lot of options are available since then.. But with the great feedback from forums these days, I think I can do it again 🙂

Looking to completely replace my existing PC (no re-used parts). Considering the following config. Hope to run most new games smoothly at 1920 x 1200. Will also be using this for image editing, viewing movies and the occational video editing. My budget is roughly $1500 for the entire setup, including monitor. Not sure if it is justified, but I have a preference for Intel CPUs and ATI GPUs. Unless it is fairly simple, I probably won't be venturing into any serious overclocking.

Opinions / feedback is appreciated!

The 640 AAKS might be a little more quiet and generate less heat. I'm not sure how many platters that 500 uses but i'm sure the 640 uses 2 320 high density platters.

Also, if you plan to overclock, you might want to add 50$ for a Tuniq Tower 120. The blue graph bars represent degrees in Celsius. Tuniq - 45* Arctic 48.5* - Read the review for more information.

Other than that, it looks sweet.

Good Luck!

Expensive RAM, just get the $85 DDR2-800 G.Skill instead.

I'd get a less overkill PSU but that may not be that expensive given the bundle deal.

Same with the hard drive, I'd get the 640GB instead unless the 500GB is saving you a lot of cash.

I'd get less expensive RAM that's rated for 1.8V operation:

There are other choices as well if you don't like G.Skill.

I assume you're buying such a large power supply because you're intending to buy a second 4870 at some point. If that's not true, bring the PSU way down and save yourself some money. 550W would be plenty for that system with a single video card.

If you are planning on adding a second card I would buy a PSU from a company with a better reputation. Rosewill is not known for quality PSUs although some of their units are ok.

Lastly, if you're expecting it to be a year or longer before you pop in the second video card, don't bother. At that point there will be a single-card option that will outperform two 4870s with less heat and noise.
