New Gaming Rig - 1100€

Hello everyone i need help choosing the parts for a new gaming computer.

1. I will be using the computer mainly to play the most recent games at 1080p.

2. My budget is 1100€ euros.

3. I will be buying the parts in Portugal.

4. The retailer is this one http://www.globaldata.pt/

5. Prefer Nvidia and Intel

7. I pretend to do some overclocking, but nothing too extreme since pretty new at it specially at the CPU.

9. I plan on building it in 2-3 weeks

X. I already have a licence for windows 7.

Ok now, all the components that im going to list are the only ones that i need, and as i already said i just want this computer to run games as best as possible everything else does not matter.

Case - COOLERMASTER K-350 - 34,80 €
SSD - SAMSUNG SSD 840 PRO 128GB SATA III - 131,50 €
PSU - XFX PRO 550W CORE EDITION - 62,30 €
RAM -CORSAIR KIT 8GB DDR3 1600MHZ PLATINUM (CL8 - 1.5V) - 99,50 €
Board - MSI H77MA-G43 - 75,50 €
CPU - INTEL CORE i7 3770K (3.5GHZ) SKT 1155 - 295,40 €
GPU - Need advise

Total - 699€

So my doubt now is if there is something i should change or cut so that i can get a GTX780 (650€, not in this retailer tho).

Thanks in advance

Welcome to Anandtech! 🙂

You're on the right track there. But if you want to overclock the CPU, you need a Z77 board and an aftermarket cooler. For gaming, 3570K is really just as good as 3770K in the vast majority of games. In any case, you can relieve any bottlenecking that could occur in the future by overclocking the 3570K.

Do you have a hard drive to go with that SSD? 128GB isn't really enough for much more than the OS, program files and a few games. You'd need at least a 256GB SSD to be comfortable without a HDD.

Your budget isn't big enough for a GTX 780. That leaves only 450€ for the rest, of which 300€ is just the CPU and the motherboard... it won't work. 1300€ total is realistic.

You didn't mention your monitor resolution. Do you own a monitor (plus other peripherals), and which one?

Drivespace is no problem. At the moment i have 250gb hdd on my laptop and i never used more then 100gb, so il be fine on that.

For periferals i have everything. The only thing that i need are components that are listed above.

Is this setup ok, if i can throw an extra 150€ for the gtx780?

You say you want to play the latest games. One such game typically takes anywhere from 10GB to 25GB, and since you're talking about multiple such games, I just don't see how the 120GB drive issufficient. I imagine you don't play games much on your laptop, so the drive space used on it is probably not indicative of what you might be using on the desktop.

The memory should be 1.5V, not 1.65V. The lower the voltage the better, and official Intel recommendation is 1.55V max. if I'm not mistaken (the memory controller is on the CPU).

Otherwise looks good, although you're still missing an aftermarket cooler (e.g. Hyper 212 Evo) which is needed for overclocking. If you don't want to OC immediately the stock cooler is fine, but you will need go through the process of uninstalling the stock cooler and installing an aftermarket cooler when you want to OC, this is something you could avoid by buying the cooler now.

Whether the GTX 780 is a good idea depends on exactly what games you play (please tell us) and how important you consider image quality and performance. GTX 780 is definitely for only those people who want the best of the best. If you're more interested in the actual gameplay, and just want sufficiently good graphics and smoothness for an enjoyable experience, I would recommend HD7950/7970 or GTX 670.

I have this habit, where when im not playing a game i uninstall it. I at max have like 3 games installed so space is not a problem at the moment, and even if it becomes, i can just buy a 1TB HDD later for cheap.

For the RAM thx for the advice.

The cooler i can upgrade 1-2 months later aswell.

Now for the GPU, yes im one of those people that likes to max everything and have at least 55+ fps, sure i reduce the AA from 8x to 2x if i dont the any diference, same goes for shadow quality.

Then you should get a 300-400€ card now and another one later. One top of the line card now will become midrange in a year or two; an almost-top card will still get 50+ frames per second with a little less eye candy and you can replace it in two years and still get 50+ frames per second with almost all the eye candy.

What resolution is your monitor? If it's 1080p, don't bother with the GTX 780. I took a look through all the games that Anandtech benchmarked for the GTX 780 review, and the games fell into two categories:

1. The GTX 780 is the same speed or slower than the 7970
2. The GTX 780 is faster, but both are well above 60 FPS

The only game that didn't fall into either of those categories was Far Cry 3.

Keep in mind that this is with a stock 7970. The 7970 overclocks well, the GTX 780 is basically locked out of overclocking.

Are you just a trolling fanboy or what?
A 3rd party gtx 780 scores almost as good as a titan.. (some games even as good)
+ you can get about 5-10% more performance out of the gtx 780 when you overclock it.. (depending on which 3rd party you buy obviously)

mfenn was talking about performance on 1080p. Why are you posting a 2560x1440 chart?

You also didn't answer his question about your monitor's resolution. I asked this question as well, and you ignored it.

I agree with mfenn, for current games a GTX 780 is probably not worth it to you, on 1080p that is. 7970 is all you need to run almost everything super smoothly. Contrary to what mfenn said though, Crysis 3 on very high does not run 60fps+ with a 7970, it runs at 40fps.

... I never said anything about performance on whatever resolution.
I just said that mfen wasn't right at all about the performance of the gtx 780.

Crysis 3 on 2560x1440 was just a good example to show the difference between the hd 7970, gtx 780 & titan..

Gawd, thank god I never go on these forums.
Think before you reply.

mfenn didn't make any claims whatsoever about the performance of GTX 780 on 2560x1440. He was talking about 1080p gaming.

I can tell.
Think before you reply.

Thanks for the tip! I'll keep that in mind. 🙂
