Hello,

My gaming desktop just went apeshit and it's basically gone.
I'm looking for some recommendations for a gaming laptop that will match or exceed my previous important specs (A64 3800+ and X1850). My budget is 1.7k to 2.1k...

It seems that the nVidia go 7900 series cards seem to be the next up mainstream mobile graphics card to match/exceed my X1850, but I'm not sure.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks

Might I ask what happened to the desktop that you have to totally scrap it? Based on CPU and GPU alone seems like hardware you'd want to salvage and build a new desktop, which would save you alot of money.

Chek the recent reviews in the Mobile section. Also, there are some GeForce 8 laptop chips that should be available soon, so it might be worth waiting a couple of weeks, to see how the GeForce 8600 performs.

Depending on your needs / budget, three of the flat-out fastest notebooks available today are

1. Asus G1S / G2S
2. Asus F3SV

All three are Santa Rosa parts, so they sport 800MHz CPU FSB. They also have Geforce 8600 vid card, although the F3SV is a slower GS part. G2S is 17" screen, the other two are 15.4"

You might wanna go to www.1toppc.com and take a look. You can even configure your hard drive, OS, RAM etc to your liking.

Cheers!

P.S. Both the 15.4" systems can be configured for around / under $2000

I don't really get the concept of a gaming laptop.

You can build a desktop from scratch for under $600 that will outpace any gaming laptop under $3000 on the market.

When you're gaming on a laptop, you're using a lot of CPU/GPU power, meaning that you're going to be tethered to an outlet anyways. You'll want it on a desk anyways, unless you're planning on gaming with the trackpad (bad idea). In 6 months, your gaming laptop will be obsolete (because its GPU is non-upgradeable).

If you have a $2000 budget, spend $600 on a gaming desktop, and the rest on a good portable laptop.

Please give example. I'd love to build a computer now for under $600, as I am in need of a new desktop.

I spent about $800 building a gaming desktop, not including a case and hard drives.. plus $500 for a 24" LCD. I could have spent the money on one of these, and had portability with about half the performance (according to 3dMark). It actually would be more than half the performance, because I'd be using 1680x1050 instead of 1920x1200. Even better if it was a 14" 1280x800 with the same 8600M GT graphics.

Edit: BTW, those notebooks I linked to are the best performance you can get now, unless you go to some huge SLI behemoth... And they're under $1500

The ultimate gaming laptop
the Pavilion HDX is its mammoth 20.1-inch LCD Ultra BrightView widescreen display
Intel's new Core 2 Duo T7700 processors running at 2.4 GHz, ATI Mobility Radeon HD X2600 XT graphics with 512 MB of video memory and DirectX 10 support, support for 4 GB of RAM, support for dual SATA hard drives (along with an ESATA port) for integrated storage up to 500 GB, an integrated ATSC/NTSC television tuner with an IR blaster, 802.11a/b/g/n W-Fi and Bluetooth wireless networking, an ExpressCard slot, HDMI output, and an integrated HD DVD reader/dual-layer DVD writer. Also on board: an integrated Altec Lansing audio system with four speakers and a subwoofer.

Only 1 HDMI port though, so that kills the deal

At the risk of heading OT, what's an X1850? Similar to Radeon X1800XT?
