New gaming build

So after a good run I'm looking at finally doing a (almost) full rebuild of my current machine:

CPU: 2500K @ 4.4
Case: NZXT M59
PSU: 750W Corsair TX750 V2
RAM: 8GB DDR3 1600
GPU GTX 1060 6GB
Storage: 256GB Samsung 830 SSD + 1TB HDD
Monitor: 24" 1080p/60hz

Main purpose is gaming (Total War series, Skyrim/Fallout and other strategy games mostly). No set budget as I'm not decided on which upgrade path to take. Capped at around $1000 though.

I'm thinking I do a full rebuild but reuse the GPU (as it's decently powerful already, current GPUs are overpriced and new cards will probably be out later this year) and storage (I only play a couple of games at a time so I've been able to get away with everything other than media being on the SSD and I'm not certain real world improvements are significant enough between an 830 and newer models compared to the benefit I'd see upgrading other components).

Alternatively I could use the money on a 1440/144hz monitor (Dell 2716DG @ $350 on the low end to the AW3418DW @ $1000 on the highend) now with one more GPU upgrade later this year before I do the CPU/MB/RAM upgrade in another year or two.

Assuming I go ahead with a rebuild I've been considering the parts below. However I'm also considering the 8600K ($235 after tax) or even a more budget build with the Ryzen 2600 ($205 after tax) and stock cooler. 8700K as I'll be using this for many years to come and I'm thinking more than 6C/6T are likely to be used by games in that timeframe. Ryzen 2600 as the budget option as not only is it a cheaper chip but I might be able to get away with using the stock cooler and save the $50 I was going to spend on the Cooler Master ML240L.

Any advice would be welcome. Especially when I'm torn between a lot of radically different options. Thanks.

I would sit tight and see what is released or announced in a few months, particularly if you want to stay with Intel.

Even AMD will soon have some new stuff out.

I was under the impression that AMD won't have anything new till next year with the last gen only just coming out and that Intel's 9th gen isn't likely ill late this year and would only be a refresh anyway. Are dramatic improvements really expected on the CPU front?

I'm definitely holding off on the GPU side of things as new ones seem to be imminent.

Dramatic, probably not, but no sense not waiting to see and buying the latest versions if you can, so they last longer for you.

AMD ZEN 2 should be out this year with new mobos, or very early 2019, and an Intel 14nm 8 core chip and probably 14nm Coffee Lake refresh chips should be out this year along with the Z390 chipset boards.

There's also the nostalgic 8086K chip coming soon, supposedly. Commemorates the 8086 chips of yore. :)

While releases may not be in a couple months, I think leaks and announcements will be, which can help people decide whether to pull the trigger, or wait.

At this point, assuming I do go ahead with the build, I'm not going to worry about the new CPUs. The current ones are only a few months old and 6-12 months is a long time to wait for what isn't meant to a major milestone.

I've been looking at my budget option a little more. Bumping it up to a 2600X ($210) with a Gigabyte X470 Aorus Ultra Gaming ($140) and bumping the memory to 3200 instead of 3000 ($180). Anyone have any thoughts on that?

For your use? I'd drop in a 3770K @ $180~ and ride out the 1-2 yrs. Single thread performance is about same as the 2600X system, for a LOT less $$..
