The reasons why "professionals", probably meaning graphic designers and the like, still hold onto to the vaporous idea that macs are "better" at certain tasks need to stop smoking crack on the lunch break. In other graphic instensive programs like Form Z or 3dstudio, and the basics like photoshop and illustrator I've seen mid powered PC's outperform a mac, and even seen certain rendering circumstances where a mac couldn't perform the task at ALL. And aeshtetically speaking, the only colors i want to see on the "new" mac is dark black, from the treads on my tires!
A few dark bullet holes wouldn't hurt either.

The problem with this abomination is that it's hideously expensive.

It apeals to people who dont know jack about computers, and who just wanna write a mail once in a while, surf some, etc, and yet its more expensive than the avarge high end tweakers computer.

It targets the home audience with the price of a workstation.

Why is it a problem if Apple can get people to spend more for less? Every company that caters to a niche market be it fashion, cars or computers must sell style over substance because there's always a larger company that sells a product of equal or better quality for less.

I'd love to get my grandma one of these instead of a PC, but there's no way she'd shell out that kind of money, especially not when there are PC's with equal or better performance for so much less.

Why are pc users ignorant to the Mac? It's like critizing a book without even reading it.

Just because you have a misconception that Macs are for people that don't know how to use computers, because you may have never tried or sen one in action. OSX can be as complicated as you want it, and offers more to the user as far as flexibility in the OS.
It's funny, if you use a pc and you use Linux, you call yourself L337. If you use OSX, you call them simpletons. The standards some of you set are pretty stupid.

About performance, here is the thing. Have you ever used after effects to render composites? I use a athlon tbird 1.4 with 512mb ddr and a tibook 500, and guess what. The Tibook consistently outperforms and is more stable with delirium, final effects, and aurorix. Granted, the performance diference isn't much, but it is enough to warrant staying with a mac. And it fits in my lap. I don't know any PC laptops that can handle the kind of DV I do. If i knew of a pc laptop that could do what i need with the benefits, i would consider using it. The reason the mac does better is using some programs it uses less memory and handles it better. I bring up after effects as an example. When you render on a mac, it uses only a little bit of memory because of the way the g4 handles instructions, while on a pc it relies on brute strength, usually requiring at least 51% of memory. What the mac does with 10-20 megs of memory, the pc does with 256 megs on my machine. Not exactly the model of efficiency you preach for a pc, huh?

If Apple can market the new iMac as a "fashionable" must have item just like Coach does their back packs or Ralph Lauren does his clothes they will sell a ton of iMacs and no one will care if their overpriced because there cool. Sunner, give Apples maketing people a few months and your grandmother will probably want one to.
