when i saw those stupid things i nearly fell over laughing. here at my university, the mac expo today was broadcasted in a lecture hall. a friend of mine who is a big mac fan went, and nearly puked when he saw the ungainly thing. man, i'm sure people will buy them in droves, but they are goddam stupid looking, IMNSHO. hey, better hardware than the current iMac, but i'm sure that the screen isn't as good as the regular LCD that Apple sells (and the standard LCD is a pretty crummy screen, by the way. i even saw a 22 inch cinema next to a planar 18 inch and a solarism 15 inch, and the 22 inch cinema display looked like ass compared to both of the others) just as the original iMac's screen wasn't as good as a regular Apple CRT.

p.s. i'm sure that Rand meant "I can't SAYI've ever been to big on the actual hardware inside them" instead of "I can't I've ever been to big on the actual hardware inside them"

The thing is, Jobs and the apple comunity really don't care what a bunch of snot nosed overclocking, bios tweaking, soda guzzling, right hand dating guys want the imac to be. It's all about the consumer. If you don't fit the consumer need, you don't. I think it's good the mac line is finally moving to the g4. That means the pro line will get a boost soon.

All these people that sit and say my AMD can do this, my intel can do this, I wonder, is there your method of reassurance for your inadequacies?

The New Imac isn't all that stylish, although within the industry it's already getting the nod for its looks. Now the Imac has the power to match. The Alti vec core and velocity engine in the g4 make it more then enough for the home user, who wants to do video, music, or graphic art, and surf the internet and other stuff.

apple might not care what we "snot nosed overclocking, bios tweaking, soda guzzling, right hand dating guys" might think, but considering that apple is losing money like it is their job, i don't think that the "average consumer" cares much for what apple thinks.

wow your a genious! NOT! Apple has had several SUCCESSFULL consecutive quarters in the past before the "big pc slow down". Now everyone's losing money, only the big boys Dell, compaq/hp are profiting.

Reading the Apple site kind of made me sad :( The LCD screen runs at 1024X768 at its native resolution and the site makes you believe that you will actually be able to play Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Quake III on it with a Geforce2 MX.

"The NVIDIA GeForce2 MX takes over all transform and lighting calculations from your iMac?s central processing unit (CPU), freeing it to complete its tasks faster than ever. The result? A standout gaming experience."

Those poor souls.

Yeah, GeForce2-MX... I wonder if they had to bend it to make it fit into the Mac-form factor "case"...

Seriously?

I guess i seriously underestimated the competion. I had seen the cinema displayd at the store and thought it was the clearest display ever.
Maybe i was wrong to brush off Planar so easily?

And to reiterate what i had said in another post in reponse to the following stement:
<< it'd be fun to try to modify into a great computer. >>:

LMFAO!!

LOL!!

Too bad you have to shell out big bucks even before you begin to modify it

Now if it did have:
ddr memory
geforce 3 ti500
100GB HD
4-channel or DD 5.1 or similar sound
bigger screen(or an option for a bigger one 22'' cimemaHEHE
A/V imputs(besides fire...for satelite etc.)
TV tuner
of some sort

Then and only then would I buy it. It isn't so bad right now though. A geforce2 mx will play RETURNTOCASTLEWOLFENSTEIN? Hmm..I'll stick with mine for now.. I think it "may" suffice.

Apple isn't bad, they just don't let you get the "WHOLE INCHILADA" like I can with my pc....I am comparing my PC ONLY TO THIS NEW IMAC thingy...

Like I said, apple isn't bad, they just don't let you have "everything in their desgns. If they had all that which i sted, I would shell our big buck in an instant just so I could have all that, without the beige box...although my Antec 1030 is spacious...

Those Mac displays are not the best in anyway. crap resolution. Try the IBM and MOZO and Viewsonic ones.

The consumer doesn't want that thing anywhere near their kids :)

Just wait for reviews, you'll see how deficient that collection of hardware is.

PS: Can I buy that in PURPLE color? :)

Deficent hardware?

You can't compare mac standards to pc standards, it's just not the same. While a pc needs brute force to do something, the mac does what it needs to do with less. The Mac wasn't meant to achieve 130 fps while playing quake III. If you want it to, and thats why you bought it, you need help. Most macs are used for one thing. To make money. Most people that use them benefit from them.

Wow. I guess I am a genius. Apple has had several succesful quarters? Oh my God. And I guess next you'll tell me Lisa was a great idea, and the Power cube made apple money? Apple has made poor business decisions one after another. The only reason I feel they have held on to their five percent is that they have carried the small professional market and with the help of adobe kept a foothold in the industry. Apple has been stagnant hiding behind their megahertz myth, while the rest of the industry has moved on. They have been held back by motorola, development, and fanciful ideas. If you think having a few succesful quarters means your not losing money, think again.

I personally will support apple, use their products and continue to spout their virtues in being the right tool for the job until a pc can meet the standards I need. I also use pc's for things that I wouldn't expect my apple to do.

"Are you gaaaaay?"

Just when you though Steve was going strait by coverting the iBook into something you're NOT ashamed of holding in your arms, He HAD to make the iMac into another feminine themed product. I would buy an ibook or powerbook, but hell no to the new imac.

Sometimes I think people just don't get it. I'm not a big fan of the new iMac, but the thing isn't built to get 680 fps in Quake 10 or even to compete with a tower. Remember the iMac is aimed at the consumer who wants to burn MP3, edit digital video, and use Word, with an easy to set up machine that saves space. If you want to compare, you have to compare apples to apples.

BTW, my "whole enchilada" for my laptop includes things like seamless wireless, firewire and sub 5-lb weights. So far I have yet to find anything that remotely compares in the same price range.

I'm just sort of curious why I see so many conversations related to the new iMac that have responses like this...:

It's so gay!
Is Steve Jobs Gay?
I'm not gay, I hate it.
Dude, it's for chicks!

Anyway, I just find it amusing... Not just talking here, even on the Mac sites. Always degrades into people calling each other gay or girls or somethinig.

I'll admit I like the new iMac, but I like the color and the LCD it has now. I know more than a few men who like it, so it's just not a girl thing :p

I love the way it says that it is easy to upgrade! "It's a snap to add ram and an airport module"! What about the rest of it? HeHe. It is sort of amusing to look at. However they may be on to something with the adjustable monitor. Very ergonomic!

I actually like the thing. Not in a million years would a PC maker design such a thing. Apple is making technology fashionable and is opening up a whole new market in the process. It's a smart move for a company with only 5% of the pie.

Upgrade? Do you think Mac users worry about upgrading. If it works, why fix it? You have to remember a mac left stock and used for years is worth it's weight as far as resale value. A 3 or 4 year old mac will garner more dollars than a 1-2 year old pc.

Even though the imac wouldn't be my first choice, it's agreat new product to add to world of compaq face plate colors, and see through side panels..Mod..bah. Apple does it for real.

Fallen to 4% of the pie now in the US, 2.8% of the worldwide pie. ;)
