New forum

How about a P&N forum for the rest of us? One where all the hate and personal attacks aren't allowed. I'd participate in such a forum, in fact I'd very much enjoy a place where politics could be discussed without all the anger. I think a bunch of people from OT would go there as well. Rules would be simple, blow up at someone, never be allowed back in.

Just a thought.

And people need to control their tempers; think for a moment & reread their post before they click "reply to topic." Also, I can't recall Dave ever really attacking people; certainly no where near the amount that he was attacked.

If anyone has a suggestion in how to implement a "change of culture" in P&N, one that truly would work, by all means, suggest away. Vacationing/banning most of the members already in there doesn't seem that workable of an option.

If I were a mod in P&N, I would go warn/ban happy for 3 weeks, rooting out all the users that again and again refuse to understand the principles "attack arguments, not people" and "be civil".
I disagree with plenty of people on religion and politics, but I don't name call or troll, and there are plenty of users in ATOT who are the same way, but a lot of us avoid P&N because it isn't civil in there most of the time.

I don't think we need another forum, just better guidelines for the mods from whoever is in charge (is there one person in reality?) so they can do what they need to do to stop trolls and keep better order.
The whole point of "forums" is to have sensible discussions. I guess with P&N we are closer to the original Roman ideal even though it sometimes seems more like a circus in there (although we have no bearded lady, as far as I know 😛).

If you need a place to "chat", by the way, with more relaxed atmosphere, try the AT IRC channel.

Honestly, the only way to make P&N usable is to run it with an iron fist. I used to visit a site that had a zero tolerance rule in it's political forum, there were some very interesting conversations, and some hairbrained ideas that were explored for no better reason than trying to figure out a logical conclusion. It works if the rules are clear, simple, and enforced.
P&N is useless because virtually every thread turns into a schoolyard pissing match, you simply can't have a discussion when the only goal is to belittle those that don't agree with you. That's why I suggested a new forum, the members that are convinced of their own superiority can continue to enjoy themselves in P&N, and those of us that would like to understand differing points of view could go to the new forum.

Why wouldn't it be workable? The members that are at the root of the problem should be shown the door. If that means half the people that post in P&N have to go, so be it.
